Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair (mostly) Length: snippet to medium length Authors on LJ: see individual stories Why this must be read: Because sometimes it’s just amazing how inspiring one person can be. This first recommendation is actually a collection of stories tied to a sentinel_thurs challenge. carodee recently reported that the incredibly talented painter Steve Walker had passed away quite suddenly in January. She points to this tribute by Dustandroses (warning for dial-up users that this has a lot of artwork in the post). Way back in 2005, there was a Sen Thurs challenge for people to write stories based on Steve’s artwork. With hundreds of paintings to choose from, it was a particularly fruitful prompt. Almost seven years to the day later, the world mourns the loss of the artist who inspired 23 stories in that TS challenge, as well as countless other writers and artists. If he had known, I think Mr. Walker would have approved and enjoyed these interpretations of his art. The original web page cited in the challenge is gone, but you can see his paintings here . Definitely worth the time to peruse the source material as you read the many and varied stories. Listed in the order they were posted to Sen Thurs. Pespective by Lamardeuse. R Silence by Moonpuppy. G The Late Show by Moonpuppy. G Maybe, Maybe Not, part 3 by Polly Bywater. R Head and Shoulders by Maaaaa. NC-17Four Hands, One Heart by Onlymesmerized. R Saying Goodbye by Alyjude. Hello! My name is Zed, and I'll be showing you some various Sherlock Holmes fics this month. But first, I'd like to take a moment to get you acquainted with some new aspects of the fandom. I'm sure you've already seen cloudtrader's lovely overview, but a lot has changed since 2010, so let's take a few moments to get everyone up to speed. If you're new and would prefer to remain un-spoiled, you may want to go read that overview first, because this one is going to be rife with spoilers (whereas that one is largely spoiler-free). Some of the characters really can't be explained at all without giving their game away.

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson Author on LJ: falling_voicesAuthor Website: Her fic tagWhy this must be read: I was a bit surprised to find that this hadn't been recced here. So surprised, in fact, that I checked three times, just to make sure I hadn't missed it. This is, to put it simply, the fic that ate the meme. And now it's been coded and done up to look exactly like the conversations are being had over LiveJournal. Why is this a fic about conversations on LiveJournal? Well, from the prompt, Sherlock and John are BNFs in Sherlock Holmes fandom. Together, they fight crime. (Always.) And write porn, incidentally. It's one of the most meta things to ever have metaed, and glorious, and I'm just gushing at this point. Go read it, if you haven't already. And if you have, go read it again. Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-0 (NEW) Pairing: Gen (Steve, Danny) Length: ~1300 words Author on LJ: tailoredshirtAuthor Website: LJ Masterlist and AO3 ProfileWhy this must be read: tailoredshirt writes some of the best humor in the fandom and this fic is an excellent example of her smart, cracky humor at it's best. She wrote this fic at a time when the fandom was saturated with fic dealing with Steve's incarceration at the end of season one in an angsty and often melodramatic way. She had a slightly different take... This fic is hilariously cracky and shows Steve absolutely loving his time in prison. He gets to rest, makes friends, enjoys the food, joins a book club, etc. It is laugh-out-loud funny and a great fic to return to whenever you need a good laugh. ( An Excerpt )sort of like the hilton but without pillow mints

So, I'm starting off with players and fics I know well, and soon I'll be moving out to recs suggested by friends in the fandom with a more indepth knowledge of certain leagues/national teams. Fandom: FOOTBALL RPF Pairing: Mesut Özil/various German national team members Length: One shot, 5600 words Author on LJ: mimsicalityAuthor Website: cookingontherunWhy this must be read: I'm sorry, but who doesn't love a well written hooker!fic? The way this one is written makes the cliche new again. This fic really lets you get in touch with the emotions and thoughts of the protagonist. Besides that mimsicality has a lyrical style that sucks you and won't let you leave until the fic is over. "Inter-personal relations." Dr. Wohlfahrt sat back, looking thoughtful. "That's how they phrased it, at least. They know I've been looking for someone to start up this program, now that the DFB finally approved my funding. We will be working in psychosensual therapy, which is very experimental still, but they've had success with it in Spain. Perhaps you've heard of Fernando Torres?"
"Their new physio," said Mesut. "The pay scandal, something about a breach of contracts and all. It was in the papers a couple weeks ago."
Dr. Wohlfahrt nodded. "Physio is the official term for it, though I believe the team calls him 'Companion.' That's what this field requires, essentially: a companion figure, someone who can be psychologist, masseuse, and lover. We are sexual beings, almost all of us, and the negative energies from a sexually-restrictive culture can and often do adversely affect performance. Significant others help, of course, but as the Spanish have discovered, a Companion is the best way to work out players' kinks and maximize potential. Because Companions are professionals, you see. They work with skill and discretion, as well as supervision and accountability, which is much better for everyone concerned. It's all very logical."
Logical. To Dr. Wohlfahrt and other professionals in his business, maybe. Mesut found his head spinning, both from the information and the implications, because if he'd understand all that correctly, then it meant Dr. Wohlfahrt wanted him to―
"But what kind of, um," he began. Mesut looked down at the table. "What kind of training do you have to do to, um, become someone like Torres?" not much like a lover
