Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS Pairing: Doyle/OMC, Bodie/Doyle? Length: 25,700 words Author on LJ: lukadreamingAuthor Website: don't know of one Why this must be read:There's a number of stories which deal with the aftermath to rape in the Pros fandom. The majority of them show the lads looking after each other: one protecting the other from the world and helping them deal with the shock and horror of it. This is not such a story. Instead, the rock-steady relationship between partners has gone horribly, horribly wrong. Initially, Doyle will not even countenance speaking to Bodie, who has obviously failed him badly. So badly that Doyle has left CI5... A friend in need turns out to be Kate Ross, who steers him into a course of study he thrives on and involves him in her research work. Kate Ross's background - whether portrayed as psychology or psychiatry - is often handy for authors. In this story, though, the character of Kate herself comes through strongly in addition, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of her, and Lucy, and Marcus. ( Leaving CI5 doesn't mean that CI5 has left Doyle, though. )If I Should Fall From Grace With God is in the Pros zine Roses and Lavender 5, on the Proslib CD, and on the online Circuit Archive: If I Should Fall From Grace With God

It's been a hell of a month, so I'm just getting started, but I'll try to get a few good Supernatural recs in before my time is up. Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: Sam/Castiel Length: ~40k Author on LJ: portraitofafoolAuthor Website: LJ fic masterpostWhy this must be read:This is one of those wonderful but relatively rare jewels: Sassy that is serious and also makes sense. The story itself is an AU, with what I imagine began as a simple premise: Castiel is human and Sam is an angel. The author's world-building to make this premise work is where the story shines. Cas has a painful but human past, and Sam is an enigma both in terms of his origins and his intentions. Dean and Bobby both feature significantly in the emotional arc of the story, and there are always hints of things that may or may not be going on that Cas isn't privy to. Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (Avengers/Iron Man/Thor-movieverse continuity, with some shoutouts to Earth-616) Pairing: primarily Tony Stark/Steve Rogers, but with some adorable Thor/Jane and a mention of Pepper/Natasha Length: 87,241 words Author on LJ: valtyrAuthor Website: valtyr on AO3Why this must be read:Because it is terribly awesome and frank. Tony's an ass, Steve isn't a caricature, Thor is trying, Loki is trying too hard, Darcy and Jane are awesome, Fury is devious, Clint shoots things real good, and Natasha Romanov, Maria Hill, and Sharon Carter are the epitome of badass. Also, there are Nazis. Author's Summary: Steve wakes up in the 21st Century. He doesn't think much of it, and it's dubious about him. He meets a Norse God, joins a superhero team, and feels terribly awkward about the whole momument at Arlington he's rendered obsolete by not being dead. Meanwhile, Tony is trying to make his mark on history by being the man who finally drove Nick Fury over the edge. ( Steve is working on acclimating to the future... )Tomorrow Belongs To Me by valtyr

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis Pairing: none Length: 2,000 Author on LJ: chaps1870Author Website: Rode Hard Why this must be read: I'd be remiss if I didn't rec at least one post-"Trinity" fic this month. What I especially like about this story is that we join the action mid-way through and it ends before there's a resolution. It's not a snippet, it's intentionally written this way and doesn't come with a guaranteed happy ending. It's a story that shows John and Rodney still at a crossroads with their friendship, both too stubborn to concede a point and still stinging from the events on Doranda. I liked the fact that we don't get a pat happy ending here and that the author makes no apologies for not providing one. As with real life, being hurt by a close friend and having your trust abused by that same person takes time for those wounds to heal. Sometimes it takes a traumatic event to put everything back into focus. Consequences

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Ray Kowalski/Andreas Volpe Length: 12K Author on LJ: thete1Author Website: telandWhy this must be read:As a RayK fan I get all hot and bothered about "Asylum," particularly about the opening teaser. Kowalski and Volpe have mere minutes on the screen together and they just about set the place on fire with their chemistry. So, naturally, I am a fan of fic that investigates their connection. Te's fic is set pre-season 3, and sizzles with heat and humour as Kowalski finds himself in the wrong place at the right time. This is a prequel to the way more angsty, but still awesome Volpe, in which Kowalski tries to explain to Fraser just what Volpe was to him. Kaluha

Fandom: GUNDAM WING Pairing: gen Length: ~1, 000 words Author on LJ: jak_frosttyAuthor Website: just LJ that I can find Why this must be read: Author's Summary: Gundam Wing Mobile Suit, Duo, Death comes calling; Duo refuses to go This is a masterpiece of atmospheric writing and visceral imagery. I literally hear the rattle of Death's breathing, smell the iron tang of blood, and see the long shadow falling over a broken body in its final hours. Jak Frost knows how to set a scene for one of my favorite tropes in Gundam Wing fandom that unfortunately isn't written that often, Duo meeting his name sake, Death. Jak's interpretation of Duo becoming Death's avatar, Death incarnate really, on Earth is just fascinating as hell and makes me wish for more in this universe. Another lovely example of the variety still being pumped out in GW fandom and the intriguing new twists on older ideas. A Conversation with God
