Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing (...foursome): Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski/Stella Kowalski/Ray Vecchio
Length: 2100 words
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: On Ao3

Why this must be read: A very unlikely foursome built around the metaphor of square dancing? Literally? It works. Sossity's Stella is nuanced and realistic, tough and yet still idealistic. She's exactly like her canon portrayal, but so much deeper and better nuanced than we get to see on screen; the format of the story is downright artistic and makes it a fast, comfortable read. The way Stella and Ben connect is its own sort of magic. It all comes together with grace and humor, and you might just find yourself smiling right on through it as it all comes together.

Fandom: INCEPTION
Title: small town heroes, big time crooks
Pairing: Arthur/Eames
Length: 7,791
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] paxlux ([livejournal.com profile] bashfulbetty)
Author Website: masterlist of fics on author's journal
Why this must be read: In this non-dreamshare-based AU, Eames is a high-class international spy, and Arthur is the badass freelance assassin he teams up with. Together, they are terrifying and efficient sociopathic killing machines.

Naturally, they fall completely in love.

If that's not enough all by itself to convince you to read this fic, there's the fact that Paxlux manages to achieve a dizzying amount of sap in between the high body count. The writing is as streamlined as the heists they pull--alternately smooth and rough, always joyously executed. I'd quote every line if I could. <3

He’s covered in mud from hand-to-hand combat and blood has sprayed all over him. Arthur steals Eames’s champagne glass and Eames says, 'Darling, you need a shower.' )

I have followed a diversion into alternative universe territory. The van is running well, but the views are very different.

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 53,161 words
Author on LJ [livejournal.com profile] judesmkThe LJ seems to have been created purely for posting to the Big Bang.
Author website/archives Judes
Why this must be read: This is a long and satisfying novel-length AU set in the theatrical world. Unlike Masquerade, which I recced a week or so ago, the lads are not undercover. Doyle really is an actor/singer and Bodie a successful producer looking for a lead for his new production. The men get off to a bad start (just as the lads do in fanon in their partnership), but the twists and turns of the story bring them together. The descriptions of the world and the jobs are detailed and satisfying, and at all times we can see the personalities of the lads, and ask ourselves what things might have been like if they had been born into different circumstances. The answers to that question are what can create a good AU and this story certainly does. It was written for the 2011 Big Bang and has beautiful accompanying art by [livejournal.com profile] mella68. There are only two stories on Judes’ AO3 account and I do hope we hear more from this brilliant author.

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: gen
Length: 1,773 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author website/archives: FFN
Why this must be read: Since it's obviously close to Christmas *g* I thought we could do with a holiday-themed fic rec! I have a soft spot for this little gem because it features Ma Mallard (always adored her character!) and shows a side of Tony we usually don't get to see. It's bittersweet and heartwarming and makes me want to have seen this in canon.
