Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: none Length: 6k Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: FFN ProfileWhy this must be read:Mischief and wry humor are the courses du jour. This story follows an unlikely narrator, Jocasta Nu, the caretaker of the Jedi Archives, throughout the course of the day. This particular day is a significant one for senior Padawans as it is the occasion of a contest of cunning and endurance that is held only once every seven years. It is set pre-TPM during Obi-Wan Kenobi's apprenticeship to Qui-Gon Jinn. I simply cannot recommend Ruth's body of work strongly enough. Her prose is stunningly beautiful and elegant, her characterizations wonderfully accurate. She does not merely borrow characters from the GFFA and use them in her stories. She fleshes out the characters completely, and in doing so, adds something to the original portrayal that was not there before. The Tournament

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: none Length: 3k Author on LJ: xtinethepirateAuthor Website: FFN ProfileWhy this must be read:The story of Obi-Wan Kenobi's stuffed bantha is told in two parts with a bonus epilogue. Part one features the first meeting between a three-year-old Obi-Wan and an almost instantly smitten Qui-Gon, while the second part illustrates the brightest side of Anakin Skywalker. This story is light and sweet and portrays two of the central relationships of the PT. Bantha

Fandom: STAR WARS Characters: Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker/Obi-Wan Kenobi Length: ~1500 words Author on LJ: patientalienAuthor Website: FFN profileWhy this must be read:This story illustrates the dynamic between Anakin and Obi-Wan in a domestic setting and explores the way that Ahsoka is incorporated into that dynamic during the Clone Wars. The three of them form an unsurprisingly dysfunctional family, and like many families, the holiday can easily be classified as a hot mess. Ahsoka tries to salvage the situation, and, at least from a certain point of view, her noble efforts are not in vain. The characterizations feel amusingly authentic - Anakin is obnoxious, as per usual, poor Obi-Wan is long-suffering and just wants to get drunk, and Ahsoka is a good, self-sufficient little Padawan. Also, I strongly recommend that you check out the other fics by this author. Hers were among the first I read when I stumbled into the wonderful world of fanfic slightly more that a year ago. Enjoy. Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Obi-Wan/OC, Obi-Wan/Anakin pre-slash. Length: ~1800 words Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Dreamwidth ficsWhy this must be read:This author has a talent that I respect, rare and to my taste: dark with swirls of humor, like strings of condensed milk in espresso. Some really good stories are on the 'author website' link, more have been read by me circa 2008-2009 and then taken down by the author; I should very much like to reread them. If anyone knows where they are online, please PM. As for this story, explaining the title would give away a great deal of the plot, and you are not going to believe who the OC is. Psychomanteum

Fandom: STAR WARS Characters: Versé, Yané, Saché, Eirtaé, Noré, Rabé [Amidala's Handmaidens] Length: 1803 words Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: FOS ProfileWhy this must be read:This is a lyrical elegy to a fallen Handmaiden, one of those capable, deadly young women who were chosen to protect a Queen because they resembled her and could dissemble enough to act as decoy. A dark and moody piece. EAD 121513: Freedom of speech DOT net has changed to Ghosts of the Vanguard and if anyone knows of a valid link to this story, I'll be glad to fix it. Fandom: STAR WARS Characters: Anakin, Obi-Wan, mentions of Padmé Length: 408 words Author on LJ: crazytenorAuthor Website: FFN ProfileWhy this must be read:The yearning on either Anakin's side or Obi-Wan's side for the other is a finely delineated element in the best romantic stories featuring the two. Replace the 'or' in the previous sentence with an 'and' and the story ends happily, leave it in and the story simply ends. This author writes a fine WIP, too, but Wait is a free-verse sort of piece that paints a definite picture. Wait

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairings: Obi-Wan/Anakin, Anakin/Padmé Length: Novella Author on LJ: darthdollyAuthor Website: FFN Profile and Force Haven websiteWhy this must be read:An AU to the erstwhile end to the saga, Revenge of the Sith, is one of the most popular Star Wars themes out there. This one takes the characters on a ride that shows the unhindered rage of a young Sith Lord, as he takes his revenge on his former master. The trilogy begins with A Simple Change, showing the tenor of the Master/Padawan relationship at a cusp of transition (otherwise known as pre-slash), when it settles into the framework of the later two stories. Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan Length: 6120 words Author on LJ: lola_four_oneAuthor Website: Fic tagsWhy this must be read:A long-lived franchise such as Star Wars accumulates lots of baggage in fandom: canon, manon and fanon. What fun to throw it all away and focus simply on the basics of storytelling, right from the source! In the '09 Party Like It's 1999! ficathon, Obi/Qui lovers of all sorts happily flow-walked backwards, contributing fic after fic. This one uses an untried Obi-Wan as he grows into his own sexual maturity, with the aid of an ever-attentive Master, from the prompt: A theme/plot point: Master/Padawan sexual intimacy is - objectively - completely unacceptable, and possibly (probably?) even seriously criminal. What happens? The author writes Anakin/Obi-Wan, as well. Is This Desire

Fandom: STAR WARS Characters: Siri Tachi, Ferus Olin, Yoda, Adi Gallia Length: ~2100 words Author on LJ: emthejedichicAuthor Website: FFN ProfileWhy this must be read:The EU has given fandom interesting characters in interesting series, and I'm talking Jude Watson at the moment, fantastically prolific as she was. Knight Siri Tachi, undercover for a good cause, finds herself at loose ends as she reenters the Jedi Order. Master Meddler Yoda does his best to keep all the Jedi in his care at their peak efficiency. Read this to find out how taking a Padawan helps Siri find her balance. emthejedichic has written a sparkling AU starring Siri and Xanatos, a pairing made most appealing by the talent displayed by this author. As a fillip, this end of the timeline ought not to be Jossed by any Sequel Trilogy, and there is a great deal to be said for that. Master

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Obi-Wan, Padmé Length: 690 words Author on LJ: caffeinatedkateAuthor Website: Fic TagsWhy this must be read:This author writes with humor and a good command of the characters, particularly noticeable in this AU story in which Padmé survives her birth ordeal as she raises the baby twins on an unnamed world. Fandom: STAR WARS Characters: Anakin, Obi-Wan Length: ~6k words Author on LJ: albydarnedAuthor on LJ: Fic JournalWhy this must be read:It's a dark take on the Master/Padawan relationship, integral to the fandom as a whole, from Revan to the Prequels to the Original Trilogy to the, presumably, Sequel Trilogy. How closeness leads to attachment, how physical needs supercede discipline; it's a hurt/comfort story, in case you were wondering. The author also writes cracktastic crack, and even better, a WIP cracktastic crack epic entitled 'Now This Would Never Happen In Star Wars, Would It?', a new genre, I think. His Other Master

Wow. When Queen meets Star Wars, watch out. A masterful blend of guitar slides and someone who sure sounds like Freddie Mercury wailing the lyrics and you are swept away into the GFFA easier than any other way I can think of. Fandom: STAR WARS Characters: Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, Mystery Guest Length: ~3k words Author on LJ: beellegeeAuthor Website: BeElleGee's Bit of Heaven plus ProfileWhy this must be read:The nice thing about long-lived franchises is that one may discover older fanfics that jibe exactly with newer canon, especially in the regard of characterization. For instance, the Maul in this story fits in with the recent Star Wars: The Clone Wars Maul, a nice revelation . Though this author writes slash as well as het, I picked this story because it portrays the thoroughness of Darth Sidious' preparation of his apprentice. It was pretty nice of him to suggest ... well, read the story and find out. Trespassing

Fandom: STAR WARS Characters: Anakin, Obi-Wan Length: 15962 words Author on LJ: snootiegirlAuthor Website: ProfileWhy this must be read:There is a tender genre of story, the hurt/comfort mood of which can be either slash or het or gen. This story is an example of an AU in which Obi-Wan is horribly injured, tested, and survives. He endures, though changed, as anyone would be, and the example he offers as a Jedi enables his Padawan to change, as well. See how the friendship and respect of two Jedi enable them to become perfect Jedi, each according to his personality. Between The Scars

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairings: Obi-Wan Kenobi/Asajj Ventress, Obi-Wan Kenobi/Siri Tachi Length: Ficlet Author on LJ: noctavalAuthor Website: noctaval_ficcyWhy this must be read:Because before the television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, there was a Dark Horse comic series by Haden Blackman called "Obsession" which dealt with mutual obsessions: Obi-Wan for his personal foe, Asajj Ventress, and Ventress' obsession for the Jedi and Obi-Wan in particular. Dark Horse gave us fans excellent departure points for characterization, and this fanfic reaches its destination: a rich, dark place, like 60 per cent cacao dark chocolate. Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Anakin/Obi-Wan Length: ~1k words Author on LJ: chase_acowAuthor Website: TagsWhy this must be read:For seminal required reading for the Anakin/Obi-Wan slash branch of Star Wars, there's no better 'go-to' inspiration than Matthew Stover's Revenge of the Sith novelization. This author shapes a fic at the crucial moment of Anakin's disturbance at being required to spy on his friend Palpatine: Obi-Wan soothes Anakin's upset by his very presence, and the sex is hot, heavy and angry. An unusual flashback format makes the story even better. Flashes of Truth

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Obi-Wan Kenobi/Satine Kryze Length: Drabble, more or less Author on LJ: There doesn't seem to be one. Author Website: AO3 profileWhy this must be read:There is need for a Rest Day soupçon of a story. Also, because there is a definite appeal to being up-to-the-moment in a fandom, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars as an animated show is the latest *visual* thing around. This story, based on an episode of that program, takes the well-known Obi-Wan Kenobi and pairs him with the lesser-known Duchess Satine Kryze. Anyone who follows Obi-Wan's story in the saga knows how this love affair plays out. The author has been recc'd by me before and it's a pleasure to rec her work once more. Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi (aka-Quinn Masterson/Ian Prentice) Length: 33k Author on LJ: NA Author Website: Merry Amelie's M-A story pageWhy this must be read: Two men meet on a train and form an instant connection. This is a modern-day Q/O story or in fandom terms an AR (alternate reality). Of all the stories in this series, and there are many! This first one remains a favorite. You feel more an observer than a reader privy to something special unfolding in words and thoughts and small details. A classic romance you'll read more than once. Professor Quinn Masterson boarded the Amtrak train at Penn Station and looked for an empty seat in Business Class. This was not an easy task during Monday morning rush hour. Somehow, Quinn managed to look crisp and unrumpled in his navy suit, despite the heat outside and his commute to the station. He was on his way to Mace University in Windover, Massachusetts for a two day conference on Tolkien's wizards.
Quinn finally spied a seat covered with newspapers next to a flame-haired young man in jeans. "May I?" he asked, ever polite, although technically any free seat was fair game. Quinn tracked the man's eyes as they swept over him, higher and higher...and higher.
"Yes, of course," the young man answered, as he bundled the paper into the seat pocket.
The conversation was clearly over for Quinn, who pulled out a copy of The Fellowship of the Ring and began to read. This is my final rec of the month. It's been fun as always. Until we meet again, may the Force be with you! xx A Symposium on Love

A lightsaber training duel becomes a reflection of verbal thrusting and parrying, while the physical effort is a reflection of emotional tension between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. You can't help prolonging the pleasure of reading this, at least I couldn't, while anxious to know what's ahead. I like the pace of this story and the subtly erotic way it ends, giving us a taste of what's to come. This story is part of the Living Force Q/O zine series. Better than sex. This was so much better than sex. Sex was wonderful and satisfying, but this …
The Sword Dance, ancient and honourable, and perhaps the most blatant piece of sublimation in the Jedi repertoire. He'd never been in a better place for this dance, a long dead monarch's grateful offering to a Jedi long forgotten everywhere else but this small planet: ancient stone floor, so coldly smooth beneath his feet, tall windows so benign in these last minutes before dawn, the Force so rich here, he could feel it caress his spirit.
On the tips of his toes, he felt even taller, a celebration of his height, no apology, no stooping down for the comfort or dignity of others, just this honest reaching and stretching. He thrust his lightsabre forward, the green edge skimming, tingling, along the length of Obi-Wan's.
"Enjoying yourself, Master?" Obi-Wan asked him, mirroring his move, 'sabre a humming blur in the dark.Sword Dance

Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi Length: 61k Author on LJ: corilannamAuthor Website: N/A but her TPM fiction can be found on Master & Apprentice ArchiveWhy this must be read: While helping Qui-Gon recover from his injuries, Obi-Wan anticipates his knighthood, but not without a final lesson from the Force and Qui-Gon. I love Cori's work; it's always thoughtful and balanced with true characterizations. I love the way this piece flows from angst to realization to love without being wordy or over-done. Classic Q/O at it's best. The monotonous rasp of the respirator continued, as it had for days. He would go mad from it soon, he was certain, if he had not already. But the prospect of the noise ceasing held far greater terror than mere insanity. Each wheeze of the precious and horrible machine scraped along his nerves; each pause between those wheezes stifled his own breath. Just when it seemed the pause had been too long, when he thought his lungs would stay frozen forever, the machine let out another asthmatic whoosh, and he inhaled with a gasp.
Artificial as it was, the rhythm of the breathing machine encouraged his mind to drift into a state of false peace. He dragged himself back with an effort. As soon as the blank trance left him, the reality hit again, and the terror returned. It roiled up through his gut and clogged his throat. He pushed down on it ferociously and shoved it back down until he could breathe again. He had long since given up on trying to release it into the Force. The Force seemed far, far away from where he was now. Theory of Flight
