Time for a little seasonal rec.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] unovis_lj
Author Website: Unovis

Why this must be read: Unovis writes beautifully and that's almost all the reason you need to read anything she's written. Her characterisation always rings true and her dialogue is snappy and smart. This is a gorgeous little Christmas story, set in Paris, where Methos is alone but not lonely, apart but welcome, and more loved than he realised.

Have a little taste... )

Title: Denser Still the Snow by Jane St Clair
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski; Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski/Daniel "Oz" Osborne
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] 3jane
Author Website: Janefic

Why this must be read:
OK, I admit I have an Oz crush, and I enjoy him slashed in crossovers because he's a Traveling Man; I think he'd wander far and wide. In this story, he ends up way north, and his path crosses with Ray and Fraser. This is from Ray's POV, and you get that uneasy feeling of someone in an alien environment just trying to survive, maybe even fit in. Then a stranger appears, and Ray wonders what effect Oz will have on the dynamics of Ray and Fraser's life.

Jane's stories have a tangible sense of place, and I felt the chill air on my skin and the warmth of the fire--sat in the dark smelling the woodsmoke, and listened to the wind howl. Plus, you know, I'm always happy when the story is chock full o' the hot man-sex. Note for those who don't care for threesomes: This story is about the duo Fraser and RayK; Oz is there semi-incidentally, but his presence does affect Ray.

Title: Endorphin Rush by Jennifer-Oksana
Pairing: Sydney/Cordy
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] jennyo
Author Website: Here
Why this must be read: JennyO knows each of these characters inside and out. Cordy and Sydney each become real in her hands and the interaction between them absolutely can not be beat. It's cute. Really I have nothing to justify it except pretty girls and outdoor liaisons. So enjoy this shiny piece of girlslash!

Title: Tangled Webs
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mahaliem
Author Website: Beyond the Pale
Why this must be read:

I don't know if any of you have ever read anything by Mahaliem before in her other fandoms, but, *hoots with laughter* this chick has talent.

In this particular story, Clark has decided it's time for him to leave Earth, and when Lex's nefarious plans to keep him in Metropolis fail, he comes up with one real humdinger to trick Clark into staying. But when Clark catches on, they both lie and lie and lie.

I think it's the ridiculousness of lies that I find most appealing in this story. Clark is so... not that bright that he's willing to believe anything, and Lex is so desperate for Clark to stay, he's willing to believe Clark's lies in return. There's a real vulnerability in these characters, but it's easy to keep from slipping into calling them woobies because you're so busy rolling your eyes at what they're getting one another to buy into.

And Lois has this one line that just cracks me up every time.

So go! Read! Now!

The story's right here, and make sure to send Mahaliem some feedback!

Title: Starscape
Pairing: John/Aeryn
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author's Webpage: Unknown

Why this must be read:

To celebrate the casting news that both these fandoms got today, I thought I'd recc a rather action packed SG1/FS crossover. Nothing fancy or deep here, just a meshing of two crews and the inevitable bad guy to muck up the plans. While I'm not real familiar with SG1 and it's characters, I thought the interaction between the SG1 characters and the FS characters was easy, natural and not forced.

It's also got some great Aeryn/Teal'c interaction in the form of dialogue and ass kicking. Again, this is another ensemble piece that gives each character of each crew something to do besides being a glorified wallflower. MALar knows these characters well and it shows in the writing.

09:32 pm Each Separate Dying Ember by Lullenny (PG-13)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Boromir/Éomer
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lullenny
Author Website: Odd Buttons
Why this must be read:

This is an absorbing story, set in Rohan, and immediately before Boromir's dream about Isildur's Bane. It provides a fascinating look at the relationships between Gondor and Rohan, Boromir and Éomer, and each of their relationships with their leaders, families and people. It captures an interesting moment, as the approaching storm clouds hover on the horizon, unclear but still menacing.
I patricularly liked getting a glimpse of Boromir's life as it may have been before he felt the influence of the Ring. And Boromir and Éomer are a manly, believeable pair!

Title: CSI Goes Deep, aka The Inappropriate CSI Crossover by Arduinna
Pairing: none - gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aka_arduinna
Author Website: Arduinna's Omnium-Gatherum
Why this must be read:

I haven't given away the other fandom involved, because I think that actually gives away most of the joy of this particular crossover - and this crossover is a joy - and in fact the author keeps it quiet until the end of the story for that very reason. However, if anyone really wants to know I've put it under an LJ-cut at the end of this post.

I said I was going to lighten up towards Christmas, and cut back on the darkness and the angst, so I bring you this piece by Arduinna. Why should you read it? Because it's very clever and very funny, in character for the CSIs and intensely satisfying. The best part, and what mades it utterly hilarious, is that the CSI crew's voices are utterly spot on, and the whole premise is treated exactly as though it were an episode. And once you figure out exactly what they're investigating... Well, I would urge you to go and read and see if you can keep a straight face. I couldn't.

Title: The Spaces Between Us by Vanilla Tiger
Pairing: Warren/Katrina
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] vanilla_tiger
Author Website: Familiar Oddities
Why this must be read:

A BtVS/AtS crossover may not be that radical, but seeing Warren, who is solely associated with Sunnydale and BtVS, working with Knox in Wolfram and Hart makes this an excellent crossover fic. I find when I read it that I have a very distinct sense of a character in an environment alien to him yet familiar to me, and that feeling of disjointedness works very well in this fic, where Warren is so alone and desperate. Warren has never been to Sunnydale, but his girlfriend Katrina has, and it has changed her. What happened Katrina? How can Warren bring her back? How does Knox help?

VT's Warren is perfectly in character, but this is no surprise. What is new in this fic is her excellent Knox. Acting canonically in a fanfic situation, VT's Knox is entirely true to form. She's also got Illyria spot-on. And really, VT has made Katrina her own.

Why this must be read: Oh boy! I really can't say enough about this story. It has it all. From little boy Jack, Daniel, Ben and Ray to a really bad guy that actually isn't a gould to dealing with past hurts with friends. It's a great story and told only like Elizabeth Lea can tell it. Enjoy!!
