Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thehoyden
Author Website: like an angel sleeping it off

Why this must be read:
There are several fine extremely AU stories out there, but this recent one is my current favorite. I mean, academic banter! Literature! English department politics! If you've resisted this story because of the length or alternate reality recasting of RayK and Fraser as English professors, you've been missing a heck of a good story. Also, I selected this story because I think it would appeal to people in other fandoms: don't let not knowing the show dissuade you from reading this fic. As to divergence from canon--well, there are significant differences in their personal histories, but there are enough similarities and personality traits in common with canon Fraser and Kowalski to feel like this is just them in another life.

06:14 am Haunted, by Katalyst (NC-17)
Fandom : CLAMP – SERIES: X/TOKYO BABYLON
Pairing : Seishirou/Subaru and Subaru/Kamui
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] katalyst
Author Website : http://www.katachresis.net/
Why this must be read:

This fic has such an unusual and interesting characterization of Subaru. I have never encountered anything like it, and was fascinated and yet repelled at the same time.

While reading it I felt almost upset at what he was doing, yet she wrote it in such a way that it was still in character and completely believable.

Subaru is a broken man, Seishirou saw to that, and Haunted gives us one interpretation of how this may have shaped Subaru. It is dark, depressing, powerful, and at times completely surprising; In other words much like the manga itself.

Please be warned: There is plenty of sex, some of which may be disturbing to some readers. It does have slight hints of non-con, and sexual manipulation.

*note: when clicking on the link above it is necessary to select Fanfiction, then Tokyo Babylon/X to find the fic. Sorry but the scripting on her page will not allow direct linking to the TB/X fiction page, and the fic is a multiparter so I cannot link to it directly either.

03:58 pm Swallowing Razor Blades by InLoveWithNight (R)
Fandom:ANGEL THE SERIES
Pairing: Fred
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight
Author Website: Exaggeration and Blank Verse
Why this must be read:

This is Fred and not Fred, which if you know Fred at all you'll know is par for the course. Am I being senseless? It's Fred-- it's allowed. Banana, hatstand, klein, dimensional vortex, pi, taco! I like this ficlet immensely because it AUs for the purpose of exploring a character's essential voice. It strips everything away and leaves her babbling her sense-no-sense. This never happened. I'm not even sure *what* happens. The whole story makes no godamm sense at all. Except for it does because it's so Fred it hurts (superstring). I can't explain it. Read it. Here's an excerpt:

Why this must be read:

He wants to believe that he's hurting Justin a lot more than he's hurting himself, that it's for Justin's own good, but most days he feels like shit anyway. )

09:04 pm Any Road, by Killa (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] killabeez
Author Website: Killa's Adventures in Melodrama

Why this must be read: Because this one asks one of the really big questions of Highlander fandom: what if Duncan MacLeod hadn't killed Richie Ryan? How would it have affected the outcome of the Ahriman arc if Duncan had known it was really Richie and not the demon? Like the butterfly effect, that one action effects everything that comes later.

It's big, dark and thoroughly well-characterised. To tell you too much of the plot would be to spoil it, but suffice to say it ties together the 'dark quickening' arc, the AAA arc, 'To Be/Not to Be' and elements of 'Endgame' with seamless logic. And yet, after the darkness we come back to Killa's characteristic sweetness and an ending that will hit you right where you live.

09:24 pm The Season Bright by Chase (PG-13)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chasethecat
Author Website: None, because she doesn't really love us.
Why this must be read:

*sings* It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Or, well, it's beginning to feel a lot like it anyway, with the below freezing temperatures and the ice on the ground. Snow would be prettier, but New England isn't much for the pretty outside of the Fall.

I've been trying to hold out on reccing this until closer to the holiday, but I just can't hold back. It's one of the sweetest stories I have ever read by someone who doesn't write nearly enough for fandom.

It's schmoopy future fic, of the best kind you can get without porn. Clark and Lex preparing for Christmas. It's filled with awwwwwwww. If you really want to feel the Christmas Spirit, read this story. Like, now.

This beautiful fic is located here, and make sure you leave Chase some feedback!

10:51 pm Minnesota Morning by Fiona Courtney (R)
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: Not that I can find
Author Website: Me and Thee Archive
Why this must be read: Every now and then, I love reading an outsider's view of a loving relationship like this one. Sometimes, it's hard trying to get family to understand, and I found the reactions from Hutch's family believable, and heart-warming to think that the world isn't so easily divided; with homophobes or totally accepting people with no in between. Or maybe I'm just so out of it from this cold, I'm not making any sense. Lol.

There isn't much dialogue involved, but I think the descriptions and the emotions that are conveyed so cleverly outweigh any wish for more dialogue. The ending, especially, really hit me hard because it gives you an insight into both sides of the fence, as it were, highlighting the fact that there is no perfect relationship. Or, as I like to think, they are perfect because of their imperfections.
