Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: flambeauAuthor’s Website: the flambeau factoryWhy this must be read: I fear saying too much about this fic, lest I ruin it. I will say that the story focuses on a minor character, one who I’ve never seen used in fanfic before. Thoughtful, and sympathetic to a character who very rarely receives any fannish love. After the earthThere are *tons* of excellent HP fics, and we’re already at the end of the month, and the end of my turn at the wheel for this fandom. More of my recs are at ireadthat, for those of you who may be interested.

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK: UK Pairing: Stuart/Vince Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Unknown; More QaFUK stories by Koenig (and others) in the BritSlash archiveWhy this must be read:This is an AU that takes place at the end of series one--the events of series 2 never happened in this 'verse. This is a short first-person Vince POV look at their couplehood. I'm not sure what to make of the emotional tone of this story, but it's certainly one way things could have turned out between Stuart and Vince. Domesticity

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: 3janeAuthor’s Website: a girl needs a gun these daysWhy this must be read: One of the things I like about HP fandom is how authors take the idea of war--a magical war that has affected *everyone* to greater or lesser degree--and build upon it. This story follows Molly Weasley about on Order business, a change, as Molly is infrequently an active Order member in fanfic. Excellent use of the character, without any of the clichés usually attached to her. The house is warded. There are layers of magicks covering it, and all the power of two old wizarding families is soaked into the stones. She and Arthur made blood patterns round the walls of the Burrow, earlier this year. Marked their names and ancestries in careful runes. She hopes it’s enough. They haven’t come for any of the pure-blood families yet. Spark

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: penknifeAuthor’s Website: Penknife to PaperWhy this must be read: The Arthur Weasley of canon is often clueless, or comic relief, hardly the stuff heroes are made of. Here, we see that there are all kinds of heroics, all sorts of bravery. Arthur is a good man, and he does his best for his family (and *all* other families) in trying times. Penknife’s Arthur is a man worthy of respect. At lunchtime, Arthur goes outside to eat his sandwiches in the park. It's still chilly, but he can watch the Muggles going by and toss crusts to the pigeons. It never ceases to amaze him the way a whole other world goes on that they never touch. He picks up coins and chips wrappers in the park and brings them back to his desk, turning them over like messages in bottles.
Some part of him thinks they deserve to know what's happened, what's happening. A woman goes by holding a boy and a girl by the hand; the boy looks to be three or four, the girl maybe six. The girl is skipping. Arthur wants to stop the woman and say "please believe me, I'm doing the best I can." He wants to kneel down and put his hands on the boy's shoulders and promise him that he will get to grow up. Wordless

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS Pairing: Bodie/Doyle Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: None Why this must be read: I've always liked stories where you see the lads' relationship through others' eyes. In this one you see them not just from Cowley's pov but also Kate Ross' (I know, not a lot of fans seem to like her but I do,) and Ann Holly's. That Miss Holly also gets her come-uppance doesn't hurt, either. Now there's a character to dislike! The writer has also managed to add two OFCs that won't set off your MarySue alert; at least, they didn't mine. Doyle's family is also well-drawn. That Bodie and Doyle belong together is unquestionable. But I like how the author works in what could happen if they didn't manage to get together, what it would do to one or both of them if happenstance or, in this case, outside interference were to separate them. Though the course of true love doesn't always run smoothly, it pushes all my buttons when it's presented as inevitable. Cause For Concern

Attn. Drivers: Whoops. Both shaggirl and I failed to remind you all that last night was Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fan Vid Recs. Therefore, feel free to post your vid rec over the weekend. Reccers may post 1 vid rec for their fandom, formatted as follows: Subject Line: VID REC: Fandom - Song Title Vidder: Musical artist: Pairing: Vidder on LJ: Vidder's website: Why this vid kicks ass:Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site. or… 2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves. or… 3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.). Do not: Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage. Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web. Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder. Thank you!

Thank you for signing up to play in crack_van! You'll be granted posting access to the community on the 1st of the month after being notified your turn behind the wheel has arrived, and you can start making recs then. PLEASE NOTE: If you have not joined the community as a member, you must do so before we can give you posting access. If you find you don't have access on the 1st because you didn't join the comm, check your Manage Invites page, and you'll be all set. Getting started…Check out what's already been recced in your fandom to avoid duplicating recs if possible.
If you are reccing a Monthly Featured Fandom, does your fandom already have a fandom overview completed? If not, you are encouraged but not required to provide one. Your overview should include, at minimum:
Pics & Bios - thumbnails and a brief introduction to the main characters Overview - including major plot points/story arcs Fandom Resources - major archives, recs lists, live journal communities, etc. People are always welcome to leave links for additional archives or personal recs pages in the comments of your overview.
Picture hosting is available through the comm's moderators, and is preferred if you cannot provide permanent hosting of your overview pics. Posting to the community…Post a minimum of 1 rec per week, and no more than 12 recs during the month. 2-3 recs per week is ideal. Note that the 12 rec limit applies only to our full-time fandoms; it does not apply to Monthly Featured Fandoms, or to December's Small Fandom Month.
Recs should be posted in the following format (in HTML for your cut-and-paste convenience!):
Title by Author (Rating) <-- This goes in the subject line, and there is no need to include the same info in the body of the post. <b>Fandom:</b> YOUR FANDOM IN ALL CAPS <b>Pairing:</b> (no abbreviations, please) <b>Length:</b> (10k, 20k, drabble, one-shot, novel-length; any indication of approximate length is great) <b>Author on LJ:</b> <b>Author Website:</b> (or a link to where more of their fic is archived) <b>Why this <i>must</i> be read:</b> If your review is longer than a few paragraphs, or if you're including excerpts from the fic, please consider using cut-tags for the sake of friends-list spammage. Instructions on using cut-tags are found here. Link the fic at the bottom of your recommendation, outside of any cut-tags: <a href="http://www.fanfic-url.com">Name of Fic</a> Emphasis should be on fics that you feel are especially outstanding and accessible examples of your fandom, e.g. it plays on a repeated theme in the show, it's a fandom or a personal favourite, it was a controversial fic, it's good smut. Whatever.
Only one fic rec per post. Exceptions to this rule: fic series, or collections meant to be read together.
WiP's and self-reccing are things not allowed.
Rating info in the subject line is important. If you are unsure of the author's assigned rating, use your best judgement.
Warnings for content are not required beyond what the author has posted on their own stories.
Podfic recs are welcome, but please include a text link along with your podfic link for those who prefer to read.
The 15th of every month is Crack Van Collisions, a.k.a Cross-over day, and the last Friday of every month is Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fanvid day. These recs do not count towards the 12-rec limit. Watch for mod posts in advance of these days with the required posting formats.
Don't save your final rec to the very last minute or you might find that your posting access has already been blocked. We cannot accommodate every timezone in the world and you will not be allowed back in to post "just one more". We try to switch users at midnight CST, but if it's midnight anywhere in the U.S., it's fair game. Tagging entries…Members of the community have tagging privileges; however, only moderators can create new tags or edit mis-tagged entries. All entries should be tagged by category (fanfic, fanvid, crossover, or fandom overview) and fandom(s). If you are reccing in a fandom without an existing tag, a mod will tag your first post for you. Let us know if you have any questions! Thanks for playing!!

Vidder: shalott Musical Artist: The John Butler Trio Pairing: Ray Kowalski vid (RayK/Stella, RayK/Fraser-ish) Vidder on LJ: astolatVidders’ Websites: Intimations Why this vid kicks ass:I don’t really know a lot about vidding, and I haven't run across a lot of due South vids in my wanderings, but this is one I’ve kept saved on my computer. It’s a RayK vid. In fact, to my mind, it's practically the RayK vid. This one somehow manages to encompass all that is RayK: you know, his badass geekiness, his blustery vulnerability, the hotness of Callum Keith Rennie. The song choice and the scenes are arranged beautifully, and the jumping-around, unfocused, upbeat tone of the whole thing seems ideally suited to RayK. The link takes you to her vidding page, scroll down a bit, and remember to right-click and save! You’ll need to have DivX to view it, but no worries, it’s a free download. Zebra

Title: All Aboard The SeaQuestFandom: The Magnificent Seven Pairing: no Author On LJ: not that I know of. Author Website: story's hosted on ChrisLarabee.com Why This Must Be Read:It's another Alternate Universe (clearly set in the SeaQuest universe) and a very entertaining little story. It's not terribly long, just a slice of life at the beginning of a new mission. We get to see each of the characters, get a bit of their background and then they're off on a new adventure which we're left to imagine. It invites the imagination and gets a person wondering. It's a very entertaining little read and worth a looksee. You'll even get a few mentions of some secondary characters as an extra treat. All Aboard The SeaQuest

Title: End Of The LineFandom: The Magnificent Seven Pairing: No Author On LJ: Not that I know of Author Website: Hosted on the M7 Lyric Wheel ArchiveWhy This Must Be Read:Two names: Ezra Standish. Remy LeBeau. Charmers and rogues the both of them. Hearts of gold the both of them. They're two of their respective fandoms most favorite characters and they're two which have much in common. Difficult childhoods and difficult relationships with the adults around them and rather uneasy relationships as adults. Putting them into the same world and the same time? Makes for an absolute treat to read. I was quite worried I wouldn't get to rec this one this month as I couldn't find it but a friend located the page for me and thus I get to share it with you. It's a short fic, not long or plotty, but it gives a great look at the relationship of two very good friends. Ezra's first shot at family that isn't the one he's born with...a great look at one potential world he might've grown up in. Not to mention another good look at how his mother's lifestyle might have affected him growing up. Even if it is an AU, the themes still carry over. It's a great read and very well written. Not one to be missed. End Of The Line

Vidder: Black Hound Musical artist: Santana Pairing: Kennedy/Bush Vidder on LJ: black_houndVidder's website: none Why this vid kicks ass:Because there just isn’t enough Kennedy/Bush out there and that is all the reason you need. And if you need more, it’s upbeat. Yes! An upbeat vid in the Hornblower fandom! But more than that Black Hound deftly uses the footage to tease out the relationship between the two men. What begins as antagonism soon becomes tolerance, acceptance and then friendship and possibly more. It’s the possibility, just intimated on screen, and the way she highlights it that makes the vid work so well. As always, remember to be considerate of bandwidth: right click and save. The internet gods will smile upon you for doing so. Smooth
