Why this must be read: For my last rec of the month, I'm going to recommend a tag to my favourite scene of the entire show (the epilogue to episode 2.02), because it's a beautiful and natural continuation that I like to think is entirely canon. It's short, but perfect.

Why this must be read:
A brilliant, almost timeless story about love and change, full of deep thoughts dressed in beautiful, vivid scenes. It's both bittersweet and hopeful, and just as much about nsync as a group as it is about fandom as a phenomenon.

He shrugged off his doubts. He thought maybe they should concern him, but they didn’t. He was flying high, carried aloft on the winds of unprecedented success, 2.4 million in one week, and he really wasn’t troubled by something as unimportant as time.

It has been such a pleasure chauffeuring you around the Sentinel neighborhood.  Thanks for all the kind comments and encouragement – I’ll definitely be back for another drive.  My last rec is perfect reading for a Sunday afternoon (or even a Blue Monday). It’s from the dependable Dawn Pares, who always writes our guys sweet and hot. Cheers!

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 40K
Author on LJ:[personal profile] kormantic
Author Website: http://www.kormantic.com/

Why this must be read: Because is there anything better than the smell of freshly baked bread?

That’s what Blair smells like after he gets laid, as Jim finds out in this sexy ode to the sense of smell. Pares takes us on a sweet funny journey of self-discovery as Jim, through his nose, learns that he can detect more than pheromones and that he might actually want some of what Blair is emanating:
Blair and Tina seemed to be hitting it off. He wasn't home much on the weekends, and he smelled like beeswax all the time.
He brought Tina around for dinner one night and she was a knock out, taller and darker than Sharita, with complicated hair, bleach blonde, divvied up into squares that ended in little twists.
*That's* what the beeswax was for.
For a while Jim had been thinking she had some kind of crazy hot candle wax dripping fetish.
And thinking about what his roommate was doing with his girlfriend on his own time wasn't something he wanted to spend a lot of time doing.
He got used to the smell of beeswax. Since Blair had a pile of meditation candles, it wasn't hard to integrate. It was even kind of pretty, relaxing. Also, there was the smell of a happy roommate who was getting laid regularly.
For Blair, that meant he smelled like fresh bread all the time.
The funny thing was, that ever since he'd flashed on the mental image of Sandburg with his shirt open, and his mouth open, making little gasps as fat drops of melted beeswax splattered his chest, Jim hadn't been able to really get rid of it.
Did you know that most people, when questioned as to which sense they could do without, choose smell? Very few think about the consequences. Smell is a large part of taste, and how joyless life would be without  it! Luckily for Blair, and especially Jim, neither one of them has to find out in this spicy little tale. Enjoy!

12:15 pm Vid Rec: Sister Golden Hair by Mary Van Deusen
Vidder: Mary Van Deusen
Musical artist: America
Song: Sister Golden Hair
Pairing: gen, although you could interpret certain moments as Napoleon/Illya if you wanted to (I know, I know, cop out answer)
Vidder sites: Her MFU Vids Page

Why this vid kicks ass:

It made me ridiculously happy when Mary came out with a string of her high quality, beautifully edited MFU videos a couple of months ago - seriously, I downloaded all of them and still watch them when my mood could use a pick me up. There's more than a touch of humor in a number of them (I almost picked her hilarious "So Long, Mom," which pulls off the miraculous feat of redeeming the Super Colossal Affair as a comic gem), but the thoughtful choice of song lyrics and the 60's folk vibe makes "Sister Golden Hair" one of my favorites of hers.

02:11 pm Fanvid: The Chick Habit Affair by tomfooltook28 (G)
Vidder: tomfooltook28
Musical artist: April March
Song: Chick Habit
Pairing: slashy
Vidder sites: Youtube account

Why this vid kicks ass:

It's really hard to do "serious" vids for this fandom. Though I love more noir, John le Carré-style fic, I like my vids to pay tribute to all of the really campy moments in canon - yes, dancing gorilla and all. Basically prepare yourself for a delightfully edited sequence (with swish pan!) mocking Napoleon's womanizing. It's set to awesomely kitschy 60's music with the best lyrics you could choose for the subject matter. The two clips that introduce and close this vid are perfect. I should shut up now so that you watch this. Now.

Oh, and don't watch this vid in a public setting or else people will think you're crazy and/or drunk, as I found out the hard way.

02:36 pm Fanvid: Exotic Dancing, UNCLE style by vysila (G)
Vidder: [livejournal.com profile] vysila
Musical artist: The Hollies
Song: Stop, Stop, Stop
Pairing: gen, Napoleon/Gorilla?
Why this vid kicks ass:

There are few things that age a show or a movie so much as dancing. In the words of the vidder, this work is "a fun romp through the nightclubs of the world with our favorite U.N.C.L.E. agents." Call it a loving tribute to the time period in which UNCLE was set - sure, we have enough ironic distance to laugh at what was played on the screen during the 60's, but the younger of us also have a chance to understand the sense of the exotic and exciting that UNCLE brought into American living rooms and others around the world, consuming a taste of the cosmopolitan world envisioned on the show. It features the best of the most campy moves seen on the show - we have Edith Partridge's rumba, Mr. Waverly's Greek line dancing, Napoleon's bellydance AND the infamous Napoleon/Baby/*the* gorilla scene! The reaction shots are absolutely precious and the timing impeccable. Yes, you know you want to watch it.

So this is my last rec. I hope you've enjoyed some of these stories and remembered to give the author feedback.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Ian/Barbara
Length: 2521 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tigerkat24
Author Website: TigerKat's fics on Teaspoon
Why this must be read: It's almost Aliens Made Us Do It, which I love, but there's a great twist in it. And, of course, this is Ian and Barbara. The situation they're in is amusing, as is their reactions to it.

Author Website: I think everything is on their livejournals. This fic is hosted at [livejournal.com profile] spring_with_xan however.
Why this must be read:

Because it's clever and long and hilarious with perfect voices and perfect lines that you can read over and over never tire of.

Plot: In a post-Chosen, post-NFA, non-comic canon compliant world, Xander's working with the Council and Spike's working with Angel. Somehow they keep running into each other.

08:01 pm True Feelings, by Allison Lightning (PG)
Fandom: ACE LIGHTNING
Pairing: Ace/Lady Illusion
Length: 250 words
Author Website: Fanfiction.net

Why this must be read:

Set following Certain Events of the final episode; sappy poetry from Ace's point of view and very 'shippy. I reckon Ace's feelings there deserved more showing than they got, and fanworks like this are a nice way of working this out. Allison's much longer fic Once Upon A Time deals with similar issues using a plot; though the fic was started quite some years ago now and begins with an OC who might set off a few buttons, the writer has a great eye for a dramatic situation, an interesting theory about Mark and Ace, and original characters who develop very well indeed.

Fandom: ACE LIGHTNING
Pairing: None
Characters: Chuck and Lady Illusion
Length: 380

Author Website: Fanfiction.net, [livejournal.com profile] dynasty_fic

Why this must be read:

‘So what, you really don’t have them? Not at all?’

‘Not as such…’

Perhaps this was one of the sacrifices which came with finding yourself in love with the hero. You had to bear the presence of his sidekicks.

This is sweet and short and makes me smile. Comic, due to Chuck's presence--and completely nails these characters dead-on in their interaction.

This is a future view on what might happen when SG-1 is getting decommissioned. The solution is wonderful. It is to wish them that they explore their own planet after visiting so many across the universe. Warm and teamy and hopeful.

Length: 2,200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rebelliousrose
Author website: [livejournal.com profile] rebelliousrose2 (author’s fic journal)
Why this must be read:

I wasn’t going to rec this one this time around, because I’d already recced a Tyrol fic, but every time I even thought of another fic, this one kept pushing its way to the front. Tyrol’s voice in this piece is just so strong and so compelling and so right that I had no choice, really.

Anyway… The Chief fixes things. Usually, these things are mechanical in nature. And what could be more naturally mechanical than a model Eight Cylon and her erstwhile human lover? And there’s that whole friend thing, too…

11:42 pm Not With A Whimper by Trudy A Goold
Fandom: Earth: Final Conflict
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://www.t1goold.net/EFC/
Why this must be read:

Canonically, and genetically, Liam Kincaid is Agent Sandoval's son. The fact that he wasn't, shall we say, "actively involved" in his birth is a case of quibbling. The concept of Sandoval having a son he doesn't know about was very briefly touched upon in the show, but never actually explored. Thus, it became a common fanfic topic.

This is an example of a case where the information regarding Liam's parentage is revealed only in dire circumstances, and it's not a happy story, but it's one of the best examples of this type of story that I can think of.
