JOE TROHMAN, you guys. He's like a human version of the rainbow that god sent after the flood to promise that shit would never happen again and everything was gonna be a-okay. This story gives good Joe. Fandom: Bandom (interband) Pairing: Brendon Urie/Joe Trohman Length: ~ 3,000 Author on LJ: makesomeloveWhy this must be read: Because it manages to make me want to say "whimsical" and mean it in a good way? That's a pretty big deal. In this story, Brendon finds that everyone has a ladyfriend but he. So Joe says he'll be his ladyfriend, no problem. The tale of their love is a strange and beautiful one. For example, Brendon gives Joe a mullet. "This mullet is like, the reincarnated form of the father of all mullets," Joe says. "It's Mullet Buddha. Look at this thing." "It's truly a sight to behold. I'm getting a little misty eyed," Brendon says, sniffling and wiping his eye with his sleeve. "Okay, please cut the rest of it now." "How can you ask me to do that? This mullet is like my child. I gave her a name." "Why is my mullet a girl?" "It's like how ships are girls. All mullets are girls. Her name is --" "Don't tell me!" Joe interrupts. "Then I'll feel bad when you kill her." Then they give each other things, and it is darling. Oh, and in the sequel (which is here, shhh: secret sequel rec) the pattern continues with Brendon giving Joe a plant and Joe giving Brendon what for. And I just realised that both stories end with washcloths, which, who doesn't like washcloths? I'll Undress Myself for You if You're at all Interested by Makesomelove

Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES Pairing: gen Length: 27,000 words Author on LJ: kcs2008Author Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1464384/KCSWhy this must be read:KCS is the energizer bunny of the current crop of Sherlock Holmes fic writers over at ff.n. She betas, she collaborates, she throws out challenges, and she's even invented a new kind of fixed-length ficlet, the 221B. She also writes the kind of elaborate romance-free friendship hurt/comfort that started me reading and writing fanfic oh-so-long-ago and writes it well. This is one of her earlier pieces (from January!), an AU of the Hound of the Baskervilles in which Watson manages to solve the mystery, but fails to stay out of trouble. Woven carefully into the timeline of the original, it builds slowly at first and then turns up the tension sharply. ( I at last had all the threads in my hand, )Powers of Evil

Fandom: Smallville Pairing: Clark/Lex, Clark/Lana Length: Approx. 70,600 Author on LJ: hoperoy Author's website: Archived on LJ
Why this must be read:
This is simply the best characterization of Lex post-rift I have ever seen written. He is captured so well here and is so believable. He is so ruthlessly practical that it takes my breath away. The other characters in the story, Clark and Lana, were just as well written, but Lex's intensity just stole the show for me. This is not a story to be read passively, or at least neutrally, either. At some point you will want to smack each of the main characters upside the head in the hopes of knocking some sense into them, you will also feel sympathy for each of the three at some point (some more than others), you will by turns feel shocked, surprised, relieved, happy, maybe even turned on once or twice, but what you won't feel is bored or lackadaisical.
"You know what I'm doing, Clark." "No, I don't!" Clark shouted, moving towards Lex with all the force of a freight train. "I don't know why you're trying to make me lose my childhood home!" he bellowed, raising his voice enough that it echoed off the walls of the room. "I don't know why you're trying to put me out on the streets! And I sure as hell don't know why you don't want me to be at all happy!" By the time he'd finished yelling, Clark was breathing hard and his hands were clenched into such tight fists that his knuckles were white. He could feel himself shaking with anger. Time seemed to stand still as they looked at each other, their gazes unflinching. There was a strange expression on Lex's face, but Clark was too far gone in his rage to understand what it was. He didn't even want to understand.
It was hard to choose a section to include because there is so much leading up to and away from every other part that I was afraid of loosing some of the quality of the intensity that this story is told with. This one works pretty well, but there was quite a bit that led up to the outburst from Clark. If you want to read all about it the links are below.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch (slash) Length: 104K Author on LJ: morganlogan Author Website: http://www.morganlogan.com Why this must be read: I'm a little nervous about this rec. Not because I don't believe the story is worthy. It's awesome, and if you haven't read it, you're going to thank me for pointing you in the right direction. I'm concerned because I'm writing this at work, during my lunch hour, and I'm not able to consult the spreadsheet I'd made of S&H stories already rec'ed on Crack Van (yes, I made a spreadsheet--quit laughing) to see if this story has already been featured. I scanned through Memories, and it doesn't look as if it's already been rec'ed. If I'm wrong, I apologize. But I've been a little lax with my recs this past week, and I'm trying to get caught up. Morgan Logan or Molo, as she is known, is one of the most popular authors currently active in S&H. She writes both gen and slash (though probably more of the latter). She is known for breezy humor, Hutch/hurt (god love her!), scorchingly hot bedroom scenes, and guys that are so damned affectionate with each other, you want to reach through your monitor and hug them yourself. As a bonus, she's not afraid of angst. This story has all of the above. This story is set post-SR. Starsky hasn't been out of the hospital long. Hutch has rented a beach house so they can live together while Starsky is convalescing. Everything seems to be going fine, but Hutch can't help but fear things are going to take a turn for the worse. He isn't eating or sleeping well, he can't relax, and to top it all off, he has discovered he is in love with his partner--a revelation he is not yet willing to share. Molo's Hutch is a guy who is pretty hard on himself. He doesn't really believe he deserves to be happy, he can't help but analyze everything to the point of inertia, and he isn't entirely convinced he is someone Starsky could love. At least not the way he wants to be loved. Good thing Starsk (who, let's face it, has his own problems to deal with) knows how to handle his beloved Blintz. Equilibrium

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair Length: 12k Author on LJ: am still looking Author Website: stories at 852 Prospect Why this must be read: Because it's the best first kiss ever! This story may be short, but it's also ... perfection. Think Jim, think Blair, think breakfast and oranges. First!Kiss!fic doesn't get much better than this. Citrus

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW) Pairing: Gen, multi-character (including Tyrol, Athena, Kara) Length: 3,600 words Author on LJ: lyssie Author Website: Some listed here Why this must be read: This is future spec fic that manages to be mournful, hopeful and humorous, all at the same time. It takes a comical (though frighteningly plausible) premise: They've already agreed that this is Tigh's fault, for getting the Six the rest call Caprica pregnant. The Eights and Sixes know that the Final Five are viable as sperm donors. It's not something that makes either of them comfortable, but they can still joke. Mostly.-and turns into a story of Tyrol's struggle with despair, the Eight-models' search for identity, and everyone's need to reconcile expectations and hopes with their new reality. Fandom: MAN FROM UNCLE Pairing: Napoleon/Illya Length: 25K Author on LJ: cordwainer_s Author website: All his stuff is archived at CGMWhy this must be read:
Because it's by Cord Smithee... What? You need more...? The challenge was to find some of his work that hasn't already been recced - it's all just so damn good. I'm fairly proud of myself to have found a piece that doesn't seem to have appeared in the van yet - so here it is. It's set at the end of "See Paris and Die". As with all Cord's episode-related work he teases out a strand that screams for a slashy interpretation and builds around it such that the transition between episode and story is seamless. In fact when you've read the story you see in your mind the episode that should have been. Illya's self-recrimination for failing to find the missing diamonds and his exasperation at Napoleon for shopping him to Waverly and then landing him with the babushka are the starting point. What follows is classic Cord. Let me give you a little taster The quality of his writing is stunning. His trademark hot sex (none hotter, IMHO) and emotional intensity are utterly compelling and are what draw me back time and again to his work, whether it's a quick PWP or lengthier novella. It's an immense loss to us all that he no longer writes for the fandom but - yay that he's left a legacy of such steamy wonderfulness. Go and read it now. If you aren't taking a cold shower by the end of it get a friend to check that you still have a pulse... All the forgiveness you're going to get

Fandom: DC comics Pairing: Slade Wilson/Dick Grayson (Deathstroke/Nightwing) Length: 6,342-odd Author on LJ: mildredmiltonAuthor Website: her fic on ljWhy this must be read:This has to be read because it is crackfic par excellence. Every fandom has its tentacle porn, right? This is probably the best tentacle porn in the DCU. I suppose it's a little bit crossover, but only a tiny bit, and really, you don't need to know anything about the other fandom other than what's in the fic. Also, anything that shorts. out. the brain of Everyone who read it with its sheer hotness, it's utterly perfect characterization, and the completely fantastically hot porn really seriously has to be read. It is a lot of explicit sex, but it is both of those two men writ fabulously large and fabulously True by someone who understands them to a depth that I pray to one day reach. So, do you want some? Why this must be read: Because it's a perfect bland of violence, suspense, humor and hot, hot sex! It has sexual tension. It has incredibly funny lines. It has clueless!Jim and amnesiac!Blair. It has Rafe walking in on something. It has an actual plot... well, sort of. It is good. Trust me. Target
