12:39 am Entrapment by Twoweevils (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: None
Length: 1000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] twoweevils
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Twoweevils writings are fantastic, creative and definitely give you things to think about.

In this story inspired by an actual NCIS case, we get a "What would Gibbs and his team do" fic and their reactions are spot on.

I'm a sucker for a good story with good characterization. This delivers, plus some humor as our favorite team does things their way.

07:08 am The Sentinel/Stargate SG1 (NC-17)
Title: Alternity by Legion
Pairing: Jim/Blair  Daniel/Teal’c  Jim/Blair
Length: 256K
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website:  Legion’s Hidey Hole
Why this must be read:   Because Legion brings her brand of beauty and pathos to both worlds.

I hesistate to recommend another SG1 crossover -- it’s probably the most prevalent cross with The Sentinel. However, I’ve loved this story for a long time and couldn’t let it pass without recommendation. It starts with a lesson in quantum physics (and, yes, Sam Beckett gets mentioned!). Colonel Jim Ellison and Dr. Blair Sandburg, both of SG1, come through the Stargate, much to the consternation of Hammond and company. It is shortly revealed that they are from an alternate dimension (alternity); one where the Goa’uld defeated Earth and its allies. They have been moving from alternity to alternity, trying to keep the same fate from happening elsewhere. They eagerly share their knowledge and advanced technology, with only a few conditions. One is that SGC does not contact the Jim and Blair of this world.  But unbeknownst to anyone at Cheyenne Mountain, a link has developed between the Jims and Blairs. . .

This is a substantial story. It has the technology and action you expect from SG1, along with familiar players like the Tok’ra and the Goa’uld. It has the mysticism and rapport you expect from The Sentinel, as well as the senses. It has love, requited and unrequited, sad endings and hopeful beginnings.  Give it a read but fair warning that you might need some tissues – I did.

Title: Waltz by Irenak
Pairing: Jack Harkness/Inara Serra
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read: Sometimes when you crossover canons, you have to be careful about language. For example, calling a character a "companion" can have *very* different meanings in different fandoms. Unless, of course, that character is Captain Jack Harkness--in which case, both definitions might very well apply.

I loved this story's use of time travel, and any fic with a random appearance of Donna is a Good Thing. My favorite section, though, is where Jack really wanted to cry but didn't want to admit it.

Title: The Perils of Prophecy Moppet (The Special Edition) by Jennifer-Oksana
Pairing: Wesley/Lilah, Spike/OFC, Connor/OFC, Jack/Irina... and some more, but those are the most important ones.
Length: long
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jennyo
Author Website: Jennifer Oksana's: new site, old site
Why this must be read: This is an awesomely cracktastic crossover fic of Epic Proportions and many capitalized words. Written in the style of "A Series of Unfortunate Events", jennyo tells the tragic tale of one Rachael Pryce, daughter of Wesley and Lilah, who is Extremely Fated ("That meant that when apocalypses, interesting events, et cetera, came about, they would often center on [her]"). Just how interesting, you'll have to read it to find out. Complete with True Love, Judge Judy-like courtcases, Lilah homeschooling, Sydney Bristow's multiple marriages, faux!incest, Bree and Lilah's garden warfare, flying houses and Friends: The Musical! It simply does not get better than this!

Title: Zombies Are a Girl's Best Friend by Jennifer-Oksana
Pairing: Michael/Lilah (Wesley/Lilah, Buster/Lilah)
Length: 6,500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jennyo
Author Website: Jennifer Oksana's: new site, old site
Why this must be read: Lindsay Bluth's best friend, Lilah Morgan, comes back from the dead after some chop-chop, and sets her sights on Michael. And then Gob decides she must be a zombie. Unintended hilarity ensues, as usual. jennyo does a great job capturing the style and comedy of Arrested Development, and I would so kill to see this episode on TV.

02:44 pm Star Wars/Indiana Jones
Title: The Black Sleep by Carolyn Golledge
Fandom: Star Wars/Indiana Jones
Pairing: None; mentions of Han/Leia, but that's not the focus.
Length: 34 pages in Adobe Reader.
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

While the idea of Han Solo and Indiana Jones meeting up is obvious, it's rarely explored in-depth. Carolyn writes a situation that intertwines Han's carbonite freezing and Indiana's experience with Kali Ma. References to Jones' expertise on the occult helps to blend the two worlds together. And there's no Willie! Yay!

Interesting tidbit: This fic was originally published in the fanzine Tremor in The Force #5 back in 1989. Since then, Carolyn is the only fanfic author I've heard of who has gone on to write canon.

04:02 pm Tour of Duty/The A-Team (NC-17)
Title: Five Card Stud by Creed Cascade and MajorBrat
Pairing: Lieutenant Myron Goldman/Lieutenant Johnny McKay; Lieutenant Templeton “Face” Peck/Captain H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock
Length:  9392 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] creedcascade, [profile] majorbrat
Author Website:  Notes from the Underground

Why this must be read:

This is the only completed cross-over written in the Tour of Duty fandom of which I’m aware.  Pairing characters from Tour of Duty with those from The A-Team is a natural, given that the A-Team first met one another during the Vietnam War.  Creed Cascade and MajorBrat nicely mesh four of the major characters in a lighthearted tale that begins when two young lieutenants (McKay and Peck), fancying themselves quite the conmen, get themselves into trouble.  Goldman and Murdock come to the rescue.  The authors do a fine job of bringing these disparate characters together in a very plausible way.  The pairs also generate a lot of sexual heat in an impromptu competition of sorts.

04:05 pm In Desperation, Madness by skieswideopen (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE SG1/STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: None (though I read it as Cameron Mitchell/John Sheppard pre-slash)
Length: ~2000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] skieswideopen
Author Website: Fic Index
Why this must be read:

Given that they're both in the stargate universe, this barely counts as a crossover, but today seemed a good day to rec it anyway.

This is fantastic slashy gen: Sheppard's nephew and Mitchell's cousin are both dying of cancer (brain tumor and ovarian cancer respectively) and there's a conference going on on Earth with the Ilusians, who can diagnose and heal any form of cancer. What else are two desperate members of the SGC to do but sneak out an Ilusian to heal their family members?

It's not a long piece, or a complex plot, but the characterisation is *perfect*, the way they lean on each other, and talk each other into it. And there's a definite slashy vibe between them, even before Sam turns up... )

04:49 pm The Simple Life, by Zoetrope NC-17
This was the second fic I added to the list of stories I wanted to recommend, back in April- then, within a couple of weeks, the archive it was on was taken down and the story, I assumed, disappeared. So I spent the next couple of months looking for another crossover to recommend which I liked as well, which had not already been recommended here. Then, in a conversation at [livejournal.com profile] ds_ficfinders, [livejournal.com profile] akamine_chan pointed me to the author's lj and there it was! D'oh!

Fandom: DUE SOUTH/HARD CORE LOGO X-over
Pairing:Benton Fraser/Billy Tallent
Length: about 1500 words?
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] zoetrope
Author Website:none, alas
Why this must be read:Because anomy and dysthemia are rarely shown to such good purpose, because Fraser's assumptions about his own identity and understanding of the world get shaken to their foundations, to good effect, because Billy Tallent gets to be sane and competent and more virtuous than is often assumed.

He waits on the top step of the staircase for Billy to get home, and the longer it takes the more worried he gets; what was he thinking? )

05:14 pm X-Files/Homicide: Life on the Streets (NC-17)
Title: Homicidal Tendencies
Author: Swikstr
Pairing: Scully/Bayliss, Mulder/Scully
Length: Novel-length
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Before I read this story, oh so many years ago, I had never seen a single episode of Homicide: Life on the Streets. It's a credit to Swikstr's ability to write a tight, well-plotted, intense casefile that I found this a fantastic story without knowing anything about the Homicide characters. It also made me want to watch the show. I am now a big fan of Homicide.

Homicidal Tendencies has the best of both worlds--the casefile is creepy and compelling and the romance elements are incredibly hot and yet  still in character.

This is a long read, but ultimately a rewarding one.

05:37 pm Unionville by Umbo, R
Fandom: DUE SOUTH/HOMICIDE:LIFE ON THE STREETS CROSSOVER
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski, Tim Bayliss/Mark Smithbauer
Length: Long short story
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] umbo
Author Website: http://www.home.earthlink.net/~shellmidwife/stories.html
Why this must be read: Because it's long, plotty, and full of events. Because a mechanic and a bartender are still pretty good men in a alley fight. Because the whole Due South gang is in Toronto, and the result is that Tim Bayliss's lonely life gets taken down and built back better. Because tall is good. Because very tall is very good.

I'm walking out one night after my shift at the bar, looking forward to a few days off, maybe another trip to that place over by the St. Lawrence Market, when I hear something coming from an alley down the street. )

Title: The League Extraordinaire
Fandom: The Man From UNCLE, James Bond, the Avengers, Our Man Flint, The Girl from UNCLE, Get Smart, Mission: Impossible, Modesty Blaise, I Spy, Savage, The Prisoner, Sherlock Holmes, Fu Manchu and Matt Helm (yes, all of them, seriously! I'm not going to tag all the fandoms because they won't all fit.)
Pairing: Emma Peel/John Steed, but no more than what you see on the show
Length: epic
Author: DarkMark
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Dark Mark's Fanfiction.net Page
Why this must be read:

This is basically the crossover spy adventure of truly epic proportions. I'm a sucker for intertextual references, but this story is the icing on the cake. I didn't even realize that it was possible to write so many characters so well, but DarkMark catches each of their voices perfectly while plotting a complex adventure with an old school villain worthy of our heroes' time. If you like old school spy shows and an author who captures the zeitgeist of the 60's, you simply must read The League Extraordinaire.

Fandom: The Man From UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya, but nothing graphic
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] przed
Author Website: P.R. Zed's UNCLE Fanfic page, request for password
Why this must be read:

I think it's impossible not to like P.R. Zed, but I'm rather biased as her works helped suck me into this fandom in the first place. Compelling plots, delicious partnership chemistry, intriguing OCs, careful attention to detail in depicting time and place - what's there not to like? I'm normally skeptical of supernatural stories, but Zed's strong knowledge of canon makes the reincarnation of Dr. Egret even more diabolical than ever. But it would be a great disservice to call this a "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"/unfinished business story. Zed strikes the perfect balance of banter and bittersweetness as the partners help each other heal from past spiritual wounds and attain closure. This is one of the few stories I've ever read anywhere that actually left me in tears, but it is well worth reading this work by such a masterful writer.

Title: The Rose By Any Other Name Affair
Fandom: The Man From UNCLE
Pairing: Illya/Marilyn Monroe, sort of...
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Check out file40's gen page
Why this must be read:

I can guess what you're thinking - seriously, a MFU/RPF crossover involving the woman who so memorably sang "Happy Birthday" to JFK? Believe it or not, it works beautifully, especially when you consider how many celebrities starred on the actual TV series. This mission proves to be more than a glorified babysitting job for Illya, though. It's a whimsical and melancholy portrait of one of Hollywood's most misunderstood stars and a believable story of how friendship can develop between people of different backgrounds. Both characters are enigmatic zeitgeists of the era, Monroe as a legendary sex symbol fetishized by and for celebrity and Illya as the cool "Russian Beatle" heralding a new era of cosmopolitanism. It's truly inspiring to see the two interact so believably with each other.

Title: The Blue-Eyed Blonde Affair
Fandom: The Man From UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Cord at CAGM
Why this must be read:

Yes, it's yet another gem by Cord Smithee! Yes, I thought all of this author's stories had been rec'd, too! Alas, this story doesn't have the sizzling sex that sears your senses, but it's no less intense. To say much more would be criminal for such a short fic, but Cord Smithee's finely wrought use of language never lets your attention go for a second. Just when you think you've figured it all out, Cord turns what you thought you knew inside out in the best of ways.

Title: The Mind's Construction
Fandom: The Man From UNCLE
Pairing: it's pretty gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] azdak
Author Website: All her stories are archived in her memories
Why this must be read:

Amazing first person observer voices whose humor bely their peculiarly incisive insightss. Deceptively folksy and engaging language that reminds you of the peculiar enchantment of reading and the magic cast by great storytelling. A seemingly cliché storyline - amnesiac agent - retold in a way that feels new while inspiring you to rethink the big questions - choice, identity, epistemology (how do we know what we know?) and trust. Napoleon and Illya are familiar to us as always ([livejournal.com profile] azdak knows Napoleon better than he knows himself), but the latter not known to himself or even his partner in some ways.

Yes, it's a story written by [livejournal.com profile] azdak, and you know you want to put down whatever it is that you're doing and read (or reread) this story now.

Someone please persuade her to keep writing!

Why this must be read:

Ok. Imagine, during Needle in a Haystack (3x13, the one with the Gypsy family), Chase gets knocked on the head by Serenity's ramp and taken onto the ship to receive medical attention. Or, as the author puts it, "Chase gets abducted by space cowboys!" What follows is a funny, entertaining, well-characterized crossover that should be read by everyone who follows either show. If you've never watched Firefly, this story is still incredibly fun to read, and the same goes for those who have never seen House.

Why this must be read:

Oh, another author who so deserves to be recced! I chose this one because it's a crossover with Hikaru no Go and Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I know, not the ones you'd first think of mixing! Even if you have seen just a few episodes of Buffy (like I) you'll be able to enjoy this fic for its humour. Why this must be read:

Gaius Baltar comes face to face with God - or at least a reasonable subtitute.

Because wouldn't that just be the icing on the cake, Q posing as a god in the BSG-verse?  Their religion is frakked as it is.  This story also does what I've often wanted to see--Q playing his games with someone not as honest, courageous, clean, brave, virtuous, etc., as your average Starfleet officer.

Why this must be read:

Full disclosure: I am theoretically married to all of his MFU fics, so it is rather selfish of me to promote his stories. I don't care. Every one of his works is spot on brilliant no matter what the length; the shorter works (such as the previously rec'd Baker's Dozen and the Rules) are powerful in their economical use of language, but the longer works are a delight without being a word too long. Although he writes the best repartee you could imagine (not to mention situational humor), the tension created in Salem is enough to leave you breathless. This may be the most believable story ever written about Illya outing himself as gay to UNCLE at large. An unforgettable Waverly (so much for the sentimental grandmother of the year self-description), brutal honesty and political plays, catalyzed by a finely written OFC, and you have a chain reaction you're not going to forget.

Someone please kidnap him so that he'll write MFU again! Just kidding. Sort of...
