02:47 am Life Is What Happens by Zelda (PG)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: JC/Justin
Length: 3,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zelda_zee
Author Website: http://zelda-zee.livejournal.com/tag/fic
Why this must be read:
A couple of stories have been written about pop fandom's frustration with JC's seeming lack of musical productivity lately, but this one is my favourite of them. It's also a story about Justin and his relationships with the other guys. It might not end in a solution, but it's even more realistic that way.

The next time he's got a couple days off in his filming schedule, he flies to LA. He's going to talk to JC, face to face, man to man. He's going to tell him to stop fucking around and get his shit together. Yeah, he's gonna kick JC's ass into gear, make him stop wasting time. JC needs discipline, Justin's convinced of it. He needs structure and a schedule and limits and he needs someone to expect him to get out of bed every morning and make something of himself.

Justin doesn't really know if he's that person, in fact he thinks he's probably not, but the least he can do is to be the person to tell JC that he needs to find that person.

Hello, I'm evil_jacquie and I'll be your driver for the Magnificent Seven fandom this month (applause, applause, applause) Thank you. I love all 7 of the guys but as many of you may know I have this special love for Buck (tall, dark, and awesome!)and Chris so you can expect some B/C.

Length - 2231 words
Author on LJ – unknown
Author’s website – unknown

Why this must be read – This is the only story I’ve ever seen by DeLila DelRio, but it is one that has stayed with me ever since I read it and made me yearn for some kind of follow up. It is bittersweet and very well written. I cry every time I read it.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction )

12:55 pm Half of Life by Ana (R)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Zoe/Kaylee
Length: c 1500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl
Author Website: Ana Fic
Why this must be read:

Because it is guilt-free early days pre-series no-strings-attached (hot) smutfic. And because it is really very good. This is a first time story which pays close attention to the half-steps and negotiation it would take to get two such very different people in bed together, even when they both want to be there, and still reads fluently and beautifully in character. Fabulous, fabulous Kaylee-voice.

This is the traditional "all out of time, but squeezing in a last few recs" spammage. My apologies.

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Zoe/Wash
Length: c 800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hossgal
Author Website: fic index
Why this must be read:

This is a little snippet about the road less travelled in Wash/Zoe fics - not so much "getting to know you", as managing the "ever after" part of "happily ever after". Closely observed Zoe, more on the inside than on the outside, even when what is on the outside is spectacular.

01:22 pm Better To (Autumn Harvest Mix) by Inalasahl (R)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Zoe/Mal, implied Inara/Mal, crew
Length: c 1500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inalasahl
Author Website: Troublesome Little Nook
Why this must be read:

A few days back I recced Family (The Road Home Mix), Inalasahl's awesome pre-series Mal and Zoe friendship story. This is the same writer, writing for the same challenge (remix_redux) a year later, and producing another great story which bookends the/an other end to their relationship.

Although it is billed as Mal/Zoe, and the whole post-movie crew is (spledidly) there, the focus is squarely on Zoe. And although the fic is gently elegaic in tone, it is not Zoe's grief but her strength and resolution which shine through. I couldn't wish for a better story to round off this series of recs.

Hello, fellow ff addicts. I'm hele and I will be your February drug purveyor driver for the Jane Austen fandom.

Brief declaration of intention, links to the fandom's overview and book wiki page, etc. )

Fandom: JANE AUSTEN (MANSFIELD PARK)
Pairing: Fanny Price/Henry Crawford (with a side of Mary Crawford/Edmund Bertram)
Length: 46,400 words
Author on LJ: (Not that I can find.)
Author Website: Author's page in DWG.
Why this must be read:

This is an excellent take on this particular pairing, maintaining the characters IC as much as possible while still making them grow up enough to make it realistic. It's written in an easy, pleasant prose, and despite the length is a quick read. It manages to abstain from character bashing, for the most part, which is refreshing, and it doesn't ignore canon facts. A very good, amusing and romantic what-if fic.

Why this must be read: "The ceiling's leaking," Ianto said. Wonderful dialogue and absolutely adorable. Also, proof that Jack Harkness *cannot* do everything, despite what his ego thinks.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] sam80853 and I hope to drive this due South Van steady throughout this month. I'm a Fraser/Kowalski girl so that's what it's going to be ... Enjoy!

Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Length: 9K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] denile11
Author Website: Due South Archive
Why this must be read:

This story is set after CotW and yes it was probably done a million time before but still: it's different. It really is. [livejournal.com profile] denile11 found such a fresh approach to the whole Ray-Canada-thing, and she got Ray's voice down to the core ...

Hey, I'm [livejournal.com profile] simplytoopretty and I'll be taking the Smallville van out for my second tour. I'm very excited and I have a mixed bag of recs planned for this month. Let the madness begin!

Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: None (gen)
Length: 3900 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ladydreamer
Author Website: fanfiction tag

What this must be read:

This fic was written for a Kid-A-Thon challenge last year. There's a slight bias in this rec since [livejournal.com profile] ladydreamer wrote this story to fulfill my prompt request. Yet I'm reccing it anyways because I think it's a great example of kid!fic done right. It has Chloe and Lois, along with Gabe, and it deals with a road trip. The trip isn't the important aspect of the story: what's important is the relationship [livejournal.com profile] ladydreamer crafts between Chloe and Lois. The story is set after Chloe's mother leaves and really establishes this lovely bond between the two cousins, a bond which Smallville has showed, particularly in seasons 4 and 5. The story is slightly AU as the author decided to use a backstory for Chloe from season 2 instead of the one the show seemingly settled on in season 6, but that doesn't detract from the story. The story is lovely and moving and I heartily recommend it.

06:20 pm Haunted Memories by AuroraAbbieSnape (PG-13)
Hey all, I'm [livejournal.com profile] horseriderjen and I'm back from another round as your driver for the Harry Potter Fandom! This month I am going to be bringing you some of my favorites stories...from Fanfiction.net. Now I know that much of the stories on ffnet aren't very good, and I know the usual opinion about it-- but I promise there are good stories there! So sit back, fasten your seat belts and prepare for a great trip!

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: None
Length: ~53,000 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: AuroraAbbie's author page on ffnet
Why this must be read:

There are some many Harry finds a family for himself stories out there, but this one is very believable. It's not a big stretch to believe that a lot of the Slytherins were abused as kids, and we know Harry was.  So if some Slytherin adults who don't want to see any kids raised in abusive homes find abused children, they could then take them in so that the kids may have a better childhood. Of course when Dumbledore finds out he's really not very happy.

'Allo 'Allo, I'm [livejournal.com profile] stinglikeabee and I'll be taking the DC Comics van for a joyride all this month. It'll be my pleasure to repay the work of previous drivers and rec the fics that have made me cherish the DC Comics fandom. This February I plan to list diverse fics that range from humourous to angsty, from the big heroes to the second-stringers. Hop in and buckle up, it's going to be a fun ride.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Jason Todd/Tim Drake
Length: 2690
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merelyfic
Author Website: LJ
Why this must be read:

One of my favourite things about fandom is knowing that someone, at some point in time, had the exact same suspicions you have about a character and has written fic addressing said thoughts. For me, it's the disbelief Tim Drake, aka Robin III, is the well-adjusted teenager he seems (well, maybe not lately). Luckily we have [livejournal.com profile] merelyfic to expose Tim's freakier side in this romp containing multiple kinks, including cross-dressing and Bat-cest. The revelation at the end is guaranteed to leave you gasping.

Hello, I'm [livejournal.com profile] fearlessfirefly and I'll be driving the Doctor Who van for the whole month of February. This is my first time (!) posting recs here, and I'll be covering works that span all eras of Whodom, from the flowering first years of Hartnell and Co. to RTD's revival and his two men Nine and Ten. So let's do this!

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: None, gen (Sixth Doctor, Mel)
Length: approx 1k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eve11
Author Website: Master list of written fiction
Why this must be read:

Because it is side-splitting, knee-slapping hilarity and just plain fun, dangit. It's the Sixth Doctor and Mel playing a game of Scrabble -- and if you know Six, you can imagine the hijinks that ensue. Eve11's Six voice is so pitch-perfect, so right, you can hear Colin Baker speaking the lines of dialogue himself with ease. If you're a fan of the Sixth Doctor (and Mel!) you gotta read this.

Excerpt:

"You should be playing each turn to maximize your score," Mel addressed the top of his head as he set at his tiles again. "It's not a perfect solution, but I think greedy algorithms work best for this game."

He didn't look up. "Write all the plebeian phonemes you like. You can't fault me for preferring to play with a certain panache."
