Why this must be read: I enjoyed the contrast between Neal's dreams and his reality, both during the flashes of his past and the current mess he finds himself in when he and Peter are kidnapped. The hurt somewhat outweighs the comfort in this one, at least until the end, and the blending of that pain and the backdrop of Neal's nightmares gives this story the urgent feel of a fever dream. Some of the lines read like poetry, and I think Neal would appreciate that.

When the FBI first started chasing him, Neal dreamed Peter like a dance. )

07:37 am Where Are They Now (aka Dakota Jones trilogy) series by Dolimir
Well, as this is my last day driving the van this month, I've decided to end with a trilogy.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: in total, 35620 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dolimir_k
Author Website: http://www.852prospect.org/
Why this must be read: - in the first part, a Navajo shaman tells Blair something of his future (2060 words) In the second, a night undercover at a karaoke bar leads to Blair being 'identified' as a well-known singer who had disappeared some years previously (7230 words) With the third part, the series goes AU and slash. Jim distrusts Blair once too often, and Blair leaves (26330 words)

Everything in this trilogy links together extremely well, and it contains a lot of the elements I always enjoy in a story; it includes some mysticism, it gives some details of Blair's background, presents a strong Blair, a strong yet vulnerable Jim and is altogether a very satisfying read.

Fandom: Burn Notice
Pairing: Michael/Fiona (background)
Length: 1100

Warning: spoilers for 2010 midseason finale

Why this must be read: Unlike a lot of fandom, I really like the character of Jesse and felt like his addition has kept the team from getting too stale. This is a little "what-if" immediately after the events of the Season 4 midseason finale from Jesse's point of view. He's still angry, he's still on the outside looking in on the team of Fi, Sam, and Mike, and yet, it's the turning point. Is it Nov 11 yet? (premiere of 2nd half of season)

Fandom: BURN NOTICE
Pairing: Michael/Fiona
Length: 4886

Why this must be read:
This is a cute little case fic, complete with bickering with Fi, favors to Sam, and a client that is in over their heads. The voices are spot on for the most part, and it will satisfy your BN-fix needs.

10:26 am Mission Control by Lee the T (NC-17)
Well, this is my final rec of the month. I've enjoyed myself and I hope that you've discovered some new stories or rediscovered some old favorites.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo / Illya Kuryakin
Length: 40 KB
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] leethet
Author Website: Her work is archived at The Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse
Why this must be read: Because it's just adorable. It's one of those stories that you curl up with on a rainy day and just revel in the warmth of it. It's one of my favorites; one that I re-read on a regular basis. Never read it? You're in for a treat. Make yourself a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy.

"I wanted to kill him," Illya said softly. "Is that love?"
"Hell yes," Napoleon said. Illya looked at him, dubious, and Napoleon laughed.

10:38 am Bones Come Marching From the Promised Land by boosette (G)
It seems fitting to end things with an apocalypse, so this will be the last rec for me for the month. I hope everyone has had fun. If you have, and have a load of more BN fic to rec, go sign up rec BN for Small and Miscellaneous fandoms so that we might get another dose before another year passes.

Fandom: BURN NOTICE
Pairing:
Length: 2800
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] boosette
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/boosette/pseuds/boosette

Why this must be read: There are several great apocalypse stories in the BN fandom. This one stands out for style because it's set when Mike thinks he's about to get what he wants, and then he has to deal with multiple losses in the aftermath.

11:31 am Barely Perceptible Green by woebetidesweets (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Length: 1,636 Words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] woebetidesweets
Author Website: LJ Fics
Why this must be read:

This is surprisingly hot whilst being all Vulcan about things. For example: "When they hit the steel divide between the glass shelving, it was with a carefully calculated force: a mere 15% of what their combined mass and acceleration might produce, a percentage Spock had determined would be in no way detrimental to the structural integrity of the architecture. It was enough, however, to rattle the Bajoran ceramics on the shelves, and that was what aroused Jim."

Summary: The sexual dynamics of Kirk and Spock's relationship from Spock's POV. Spock's thought process is very Vulcan here, but there is also a touch of Human vulnerability he doesn't seem to realize is there. Of course, James T. Kirk doesn't miss that at all.

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Checkov/Sulu
Length: 3,957 Words
Author on LJ:>[livejournal.com profile] 6street
Author Website: Fic List
Why this must be read:

Chekov is adorable and brilliant. Gaila is awesome and brilliant. They like each other, become good friends and are not having sex, despite what everyone else thinks. Checkov might be more interested in the sex with an Orion girl if it weren't for the the wonder and excitement of math. And Hikaru Sulu.

Summary: Chekov and Gaila meet at the Academy and bond over math and boys.

12:47 pm strive seek find yield (spoctoria) by waldorph (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Length: 67,689 Words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] waldorph
Author Website: at A03
Why this must be read:

This is one of the best Reboot AU's out there. It's long and plotty and totally Spock and Jim, loving each other, hurting each other, and fighting everyone else for the right to do so. Waldorf knows how to do AU. No matter what clothes they wear, what titles they hold, in her stories Jim, Spock, their families and the crew always seem to remain themselves in all their disfunctional glory.

I've learned to read anything Waldorph writes because she always surprises me with her choices, and always makes the minor characters come alive. (T'Pring is the jewel in this AU crown, and is totally awesome.) I'm using Waldorph's summary because it's perfect.

Summary: Spock is heir to the Federation throne, Jim is Prince of America because his fucking brother abdicated, and the Klingons are on the verge of blowing shit up--a love story.

I totally enjoyed driving the Reboot van for the month of October. I hope you enjoyed the ride. Hopefully, I've introduced you to at least one ST:Reboot gem you might have missed.

02:21 pm Asymptote by tahariel (R/NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Length: 5,974 Words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] tahariel
Author Website: LJ Fic Tag
Why this must be read:

On an away mission, an alien culture proscribes touching between persons of unequal rank. Kirk curbs his touchy-feelie side surprisingly well. Spock is a bit shocked by how much he misses the easy, physical commeraderie. By the end of the mission, Spock loses it rather spectacularly. Which is the really, really good part.

Summary: Spock doesn't realize how much Kirk touches him on any given day until he experiences a stretch of time where Kirk cannot touch him at all.

Pairing: Misha Collins/Jensen Ackles/Vicki
Length: ~3,400

A fic in which Vicki takes control over Misha's crush on Jensen and sets about mutually embarrassing her husband and his costar all while doing the proper cajoling to get Jensen to come over for sexdinner. And Jared pouts.

Basically, I LOVE this author's Vicki. Frank, adorable, and confident, Misha and Jensen are merely along for the ride.

For my last one this month, I thought I'd go with one of my absolute favourite authors in Pros. Cheers me dears, it's been fun!

Fandom:THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle, Doyle/OFC, Bodie/OFC
Length: 35,000~
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author website: Kate Maclean at The Automated Hatstand
Why this must be read: Because it’s a thrill to finally have this author’s work start to come online – she’s been zine only for years. She inspires strong feelings in the Pros fandom, but those like myself who adore her tend to do so unreservedly. Here she takes Bodie and Doyle to the edge and back again after Ann Holly makes an unexpected re-entry into Doyle’s life. Adjustments abound, not least of all for Bodie, who gets painfully cast aside..

Tight Bodie POV, smokin’ hot sex, warts’n’all characterisations, and a blisteringly good ear for the way they talk, this will draw you in and have you willing the pair of them on before you know it..

Some cracking good banter under the cut )

09:47 pm A Quotable Thing by Brie (NC-17)
Happy Halloween to everyone! This will be my last rec for CW RPF, though you'll be able to catch me next month, reccing for Supernatural. Hope you enjoyed the stories as much as I did!

Fandom: CW RPF
Pairing: Misha Collins/Michael Rosenbaum
Length: ~33,250
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anyothergirl415
Author Website: Master List

Where do I even start on this fic? To begin with, I didn't think I'd be impressed. Misha talks all in movie quotes? How was the author going to pull that off? And then I started reading and I was...blown away. This was the fic that cemented my Misha/Mike OTPness. A fic premise that seems so cracky to start with becomes a heart wrenching story of Misha's past, Mike and Jensen's friendship, and Misha and Mike's rocky relationship.

It's an AU, but the actors as we know them (as they present themselves to us) are still there. The author takes their characterization to whole new levels, though. Mike comes to understand Misha's unique way of speaking while Misha flourishes and begins to repair himself while dating Mike. Misha's story will break your heart, but the author puts it back together by the end. I also enjoy that, despite the h/c aspect and the larger issues at play, no one is a woobie. It's a beautifully written fic and a beautiful, poignant story that doesn't lack for humor.

Plus, the amount of effort the author went through to get all those perfectly suited quotes to each situation when writing this? They deserve an award just for executing that!

It's several stories making the whole, all linked to each other, but you can also check out the master post. The story is not a WIP, but the author does add new stories every so often.

10:39 pm Somewhere I Have Never Traveled by [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller
Fandom: WHITE COLLAR
Pairing: Neal/Peter, (background Neal/Kate, pre-Neal/Peter/Elizabeth)
Length: 11,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller
Author Website: Master Fic List on Dreamwidth

Why this must be read:
Neal: In some alternate universe you'd be wearing power ties, doing power lunches, flying corporate jets...
Peter: Doubt we'd have ever met.
Neal: Maybe. Under difference circumstances.
Peter: Oh, that's true. You might've robbed the company.
-- 2.08, Company Man

I'm leaving you with an AU as my last rec, and here's why- because I think that it's pretty awesome that Neal and Peter are so different in this story, yet still find the common ground to form a relationship. Peter is kind of a hard-ass, lonely and a little aloof. Neal is a little less slick, a little more pressured and harried by the life he's chosen. The trust issues alone made for a great story, but there was something about this universe that stayed with me. Maybe it was the hopeful, open ending. Maybe it was just that, in any incarnation, Peter and Neal are incredible together, always meant to be playing some game that only they really know the rules to.

Somewhere I Have Never Traveled

This is my sign-off for the month. It's been a lot of fun, and I hope you've enjoyed the recs. Many thanks go to the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van mods, and to the amazing writers, artists, and everyone else in White Collar fandom, who made it incredibly hard to pick just a few stories to share.
