12:49 am I Want to Tell You by glennagirl (R)
*beep beep!* Hi, all! It's your old pal, [livejournal.com profile] cosmosmariner! What a thrill it is to take a spin in the old MFU van again! (Did we get the tires rotated?) Let's get cracking, shall we?

Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Length: ~2800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] glennagirl
Author Website: She posts at various places including her journal and all the LJ MFU comms, including [livejournal.com profile] muncle.
Why this must be read:

Glenna usually writes gen, but from time to time, she dips her toe into the slash pool. When she does, it's awesome. :) This lovely piece is just beautiful, a dreamlike sense about it that lingers. The love scenes are nicely written, too, more sensual than purely sexual, which I happen to like a great deal. As always, Glenna has an amazing grasp of language, and her Illya is perfect. It's a jewel of a fic, and I can't believe more people haven't discovered it.

12:12 pm Catapult and When We're Gone by lolafeist ( PG13)
Hello, [livejournal.com profile] duonoaikouka here driving the Merlin bus for the first time. Hopefully I've got some fun and fascinating choices you haven't read before. So strap in and enjoy the ride. :)

Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Length: 9900 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lolafeist
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

This lovely duo of stories have so many layers, it's hard to find what to highlight first. Of course, there's the action/adventure of a war siege, the fantastic characterizations of a BAMF!Merlin and warrior king!Arthur, the h/c elements of a sick/injured Merlin and worried Arthur, and magic galore in the form of burning beasts and healing spells. And yet, there's a lesson to this pair of stories. The requirements and rules of power, the responsibility that goes with it, and the pain of lessons learned when that power is misused, even though unintentional make these fics thinker fics as well. Catapult and When We're Gone are fics to please everyone, whether you like h/c, powerful Merlin, thinking fics, or just some dang good Arthur/Merlin.

01:06 pm Of Blood and Water by randi2204 (Chris/Ezra, JD/Casey) (PG)
Hi, I'm JoJo, back to rec Mag7 again after a short hiatus.  It so happens that there's lots of lovely new writing coming out of the fandom right now, in all genres and from both established and newer authors, so I'm very pleased (and lucky!) to be kicking off the new year driving the wagon.

I'd like to dedicate this month's recs to the memory of Susan Fulton, a shining light and generous spirit in Mag7 fandom who we lost in 2011 and who is sadly missed.

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: Chris/Ezra, JD/Casey
Length: 10, 673
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] randi2204
Author website: randi2204's Mag7 stories on AO3

Why this must be read:  It's very new and so lovely I'm sure you won't mind it's personal to me.  The theme is "family" - surely one of the main reasons we love this show and its characters.  The story is wonderfully uplifting, with gorgeous characterisations and dialogue; it's both touching and funny without ever losing sight of the potential for heartbreak amongst those who are bound together by all manner of family ties.  I'm certain Susan would have loved it as much I do.

05:35 pm Not Cleopatra-esque, by lalaietha (Gen)
Fandom: SLINGS & ARROWS
Pairing: Ellen Fanshaw/Geoffrey Tennant
Length: 1399 words
Author Website: Fic on AO3
Why this must be read: Ellen is one of the more challenging characters in S&A, to like as well as to write. lalaietha captures Ellen's in all her complexity, on what's the worst day of her life. Her anger (at Geoffrey and the world), her rage, her grief are so palpable and completely in-character. And Anna being the one to reach out to Ellen, in her apologetic/helpful way, is both awesome and comforting.

A preview... )

Not Cleopatra-esque can be found on AO3, and please don't forget to leave feedback for the author.

05:47 pm The Secrets of Men by Laura McEwan (Rated? R or NC-17)
Hi, I'm Storm, and I will be driving the crack van this month. Screeeeeech! Hold onto your hats. Man, driving this van is heady stuff.

My first rec is an AU that you've got to read.

FANDOM: STARSKY AND HUTCH
PAIRING: Starsky and Hutch! (slash)
AUTHOR ON LJ: http//lauramcewan.livejournal.com
AUTHOR WEBSITE: http://www.hawksong.com/~lauramcewan/index.php
WHY THIS MUST BE READ: This must be read, if for no other reason than that Hutch speaks German during sex! Seriously, I could read it for that alone. But there is more---Laura manages to put our beloved boys in a WWII universe where they are enemies trapped in a farmhouse, and keep them in character. It is a touching, wonderful read, and you'll love it. It's also very sexy. Did I mention that Hutch speaks German during sex?

11:00 pm Dear Roger (the advice column) by morebliss (PG)
Hello.  [livejournal.com profile] krisherdown here, pulling an old van out of storage.  The Men's Tennis RPS fandom was featured here back in 2006 - in fact, it was the recommendations on this site that led me to the fandom, where I've pretty much stayed ever since.  My taste is rather eclectic in terms of players so I'm giving a nice grab bag of fics for you and hope there's something to draw you in.  I link you to the old overview for now (to give you an idea of how old, the current #1 player in the world isn't even on it!) but there will be a new and improved overview in the next few days.  In the meantime, I will stay rather basic...

Fandom: MEN'S PROFESSIONAL TENNIS RPS
Pairing: none listed; hints at unrequited Rafael Nadal/Roger Federer
Length: ~ 1600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] morebliss
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] morebliss
Why this must be read: I start you off with this crack fic, in which Roger Federer has an advice column in which his inner diva just can't stay silent.  It's a rather lighthearted series of letters in which you find out just how blind Roger can be when it comes to other players.  It's good as a starter fic because, while there is no real slash to this story, there are a lot of vaguely slashy references to common pairings.
