Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Gen – Yoda
Length: ~653 words
Author on LJ: not on LJ as far as I know
Author Website: fanfiction.net profile
Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: People fight best for people, not ideologies. 'Let my people go' is much more motivated than 'Liberty'. Certain Jedi Masters would do well to realize that - if they can.

One of the many details which the Star Wars movies leave to our imaginations is the origin of Jedi Master Yoda. This short fic presents one interesting possibility for Yoda's past which serves to explain the dysfunctional state of the Jedi Order during the prequel era.

10:08 am Gloria Scott, or Why Alone Protects Me, by songlin (Mature)

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC
Pairing: Sherlock/Victor Trevor, Sherlock/John
Length: 4500 words
Author on LJ: I don't know
Author Website: AO3 fic
Why this must be read:
Of the ACD canon figures who have not appeared in the BBC version, I have a particular fondness for Victor Trevor, Sherlock Holmes's college friend. In "The Adventure of Gloria Scott," Sherlock spends a month with Victor at the Trevor estate in Norfolk, and a bit later solves the mystery of Trevor's father's death. Baby's first case! Or, to quote the master, "the first in which I was ever engaged."

Of course, it's too tempting to cast Victor in the role of first lover as well, good or evil or recurrent, making John squinty-eyed with jealousy. This is one of the better versions of Victor as the teens-to-early-twenties friend who sees Sherlock through a number of first encounters. The mystery has nothing to do with the original story (Gloria Scott was a ship there; here she's a medical worker), but fits in well. The friendship is convincing and this Victor is more compassionate than sticky. I still have issues with the show's distortion of "memory palace" operation, but you eat a peck of dirt and tell a thousand lies before you die. If you like minor characters, backstory, young Sherlock, and incidental sex and case-solving, give this a try.

10:11 am On Tethered Wings by Thuri (PG13)
Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thuri
Author Website: AO3
Author's Summary:

A dragon lord who doesn't know his power, a prince who doesn't know his heritage, and a broken king who doesn't know their destiny. What will happen, when the dragonriders of Camelot break free their bonds, and their mounts rise up once more?

Why this must be read:

This is an amazing AU. Like wonderful Naomi Novik's Temeraire series, imagine if dragons were abound in the world of Camelot. If they had been harnessed as winged warhorses. Now imagine if they weren't always subservient and silent.

When Merlin comes to Camelot, everything changes.

Incredibly well-written, gorgeous artwork, an awesome new world to explore.

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC
Characters: Sherlock & John
Length: About 1100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] istne_pieklo
Author Website: FanFiction.net~Shaitanah and Fic Masterlist on LJ
Why you should read this:
Another favorite of mine is narration by inanimate--or often, in the case of Sherlock fic, formerly animate--objects.
This nicely creepy, slightly ghoulish story, is a short series of glimpses of life chez 221-B through the sensibility of the flat's other inhabitants. It's pleasingly odd.

10:30 am "On This Day" by DorsetGirl (Green Cortina)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS (UK)
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Length: 2,700 words
Author on LJ: http://dorsetgirl.livejournal.com/
Author Website: http://dorsetgirl.livejournal.com/80214.html
Why this must be read:

For my last recommendation, I chose another one of DorsetGirl's stories. Hard decision - I still have so many fics (and also art) I'd love to rec - maybe I'll do another month. :-)

This one, however, is one of the stories I always fondly remembered, and which I looked for and found again recently. This scene especially stayed with me:

He locked the door and turned to see Gene down by the far wall, reaching up to something on the top shelf. Despite the dim light, Sam could see from here that as usual he was half hard.

Oh, God.

Sam swallowed with difficulty, unable to stop himself letting out a tiny sound of longing.

Also, it's got a beautiful, very happy ending, one of the things I remembered about this fic as well. Plus, it's very funny, and even if it's not 1st April today, I whole-heartedly recommend reading it (like all things DG has written).

On This Day

Well, that's it from me, at least for now. Looking forward to some awsome recs from whoever is going to be our driver next month!

Last, but certainly not least: Let Us Dare by Kianspo.

Thanks for a great month, hope you enjoyed all these long, luscious goodies!

Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Author on LJ: N/A on LJ, but Kianspo is on dreamwidth
Author Website: AO3
Author's Summary:

Uther dies instead of Ygraine when Arthur is born. Balinor helps Ygraine secure her position as regent, magic isn’t banned, and Merlin and Arthur grow up side by side. Camelot is different but not cloudless, destiny is still a troublesome thing, and Arthur is still charmingly oblivious when it comes to things that matter most in life.

Why this must be read:

An amazing look into Arthur's life as it may have been if Uther had paid magic's price instead. Long, plotty, amazingly written, with in-character characters that still reflect the change in storyline.

Excerpt 1:

“Well,” Nimueh said as soon as the doors were closed. “This was certainly interesting. The boy is Gifted beyond any known precedent.”

“You don’t say.” Ygraine’s tone was dry. “This is the first time I’ve heard my son voluntarily use the word ‘please.’ Clearly, Merlin is the most powerful person in the kingdom.”

Why this must be read:

Bookending this month’s serious fics with things that make me giggle—to wit, Garibaldi’s Very Serious treatment of the possibility of a zombie outbreak on Babylon 5. (You never know, it could happen! One must be prepared.) Jeff and Stephen—I’m sorry, the commander and chief medical officer—leave notes in the margin tendering their opinion of various sections.

Also, this comes from last year’s [livejournal.com profile] babylon5_love month of squee. They’re taking applications for this year’s Babylon 5 Love Month (August) here.

Brilliant dialogue, entertaining wordplay. Far too many puns about hands (but puns are always too much). Also adventure, also blood, also UST, also sex by surrogate, Molly's wayward but sensible brother inna sex club, crackling Sherlock-Mycroft animosity, crosswords, pickle, and rather nice John.

03:17 pm My Working Week and My Sunday Rest by Emungere (Teen & Up Audiences)
Fandom: LEWIS
Pairing: Robbie Lewis & James Hathaway
Length: 2k
Author Website: Emungere at the AO3

Why this must be read:
I've recced the previous stories in this series, and today I saw to my delight there is a third to join them. My excuse for reccing is the same as last time: they work on their own (but together are lovely).

This little story picks up in the aftermath of the trial of the man responsible for Lewis's wife's death. Like the others it has two precisely written character portraits, and reveals a view of Lewis and Hathaway's relationship that is deep and perceptive. The author creates a world that's full of detail, emotion and beauty, and yet somehow the writing is clean and sparse. I'm not doing it justice, please go read.

He presents facets of himself to people at work, to people in the band, to people he knows from church. The thing about facets is that they're flat. They're reflective. Not indicative of the whole. When one looks at a flat, reflective surface, generally one sees oneself, and James encourages that.

Fandom: LEWIS
Pairing: Robbie Lewis/James Hathaway
Length: 5k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse
Author Website: Lamardeuse's website, and at the AO3

I've had a brilliant time reccing in the small-but-perfectly-formed Lewis fandom this month. And even though it's tiny I've barely scratched the surface of the authors and stories that are available. If I've piqued your interest at all please go and check the fandom out for yourself (fantastic fandom masterlist, Lewis at the AO3). I'm handing the keys to the van back but hopefully someone else will take Lewis out for a drive soon.

Why this must be read:
This sublime and humane story seems the perfect way to finish. Lewis slowly lets his grief at Val's death go, and slowly, gently, Hathaway's place in his life grows. Beautifully written, mature, thoughtful, and full of the kindness, insight and compassion that characterizes Lewis and Hathaway. Just very very lovely.

The week before Robbie left for the Virgin Islands, he finally went into Val's cupboard and took out her clothes. He saved a couple of pieces – a blouse she'd especially liked that Lyn might want someday, her wedding dress – but everything else had gone to Oxfam. All of her other things – jewelry, books, the half-finished journal of poetry she'd kept in the bedside drawer – had been packed up with the rest of the flat, his possessions mingled with hers as though they were leaving together.

After contracting an Asgardian virus, Tony starts forgetting things. And people. And Steve.

Characters: Mycroft, Sherlock, John (as children, age 11, 5, and 8)
Length: 3490
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] emungere
Author Website: Consequence Free
Why this must be read:
I realized I've recced mostly Sherlock/John so far, so this is a bit of Gen. It's well done. There's a whiff of the Sign of Four, with its map and treasure and a buried past. It's a scene from Mycroft and Sherlock's childhood, when they meet the young John Watson in the park and play Pirates together, on Sherlock's birthday. Meeting John's not exactly the point of the story, though. It's three boys, being boys. It's a very good young Mycroft being Mycroft under (rather melodramatic) trying circumstances, too adult for his years but still thinking like a child. It has a bit of an Awful Family past for the brothers, but there's a dead toad, too, which is always good for a laugh.

Author's website: Her page at AO3
Summary:The police need to find Jack Kelso. Their only link, a grad student named Blair Sandburg. What's a smart police detective to do?

Why this must be read: Check out who's watching who in this AU intriguing story, where nothing is as it seems. I really liked how competent Blair is, how he's barely squeaking by, but he's got so many angles covered that the reader can see for themselves that he's as clever and smart as we've been told to believe. Rafe also comes across as a strong character, and it's an interesting contrast that Henri is doing the same exact job as Rafe, on stakeout duty watching grad student Blair Sandburg, and Henri's bored to tears and Rafe is fascinated by Blair's character.

There's all kinds of layers of deception going on here, but also some truths that shine through those layers, making this a story you want to come back to and re-read. Which is what I've done for this rec.

Summary: Dr. Sandburg has a good life working on alien contact at Stargate Command; however, now he has news that his holy grail might just be out there in the strangest place possible--earth. Even worse, James Ellison has become the center of a vicious race that has pit Blair and the Stargate command against a rogue CIA operative, the NID, and the Chinese government. And Blair is not sure how to convince Ellison that he's with the good guys.

Why this must be read: Because Jim on the run is always fun? And Blair is being so Blair and laid back and sneaky and open all at the same time, as he tries to gain Jim's trust and recruit him to work for StarGate Command. There's plenty of snappy dialouge, Jack and Jim being old soldiers together, and Daniel and Blair being friends to satisfy Stargate fans, too.

Well, the premise is Steve finding a box of kittens in his truck. I'm not really sure what else a story needs, to be honest. But just in case you need more convincing: lovely Steve + Danny friendship, adorable team interaction, and Steve!angst that broke my heart into little tiny pieces.
