Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: None
Length: Varies from short to medium long
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Seventh Dimension, page down to see Mary's listings
Why this must be read:

'Dead Man' starts at the end of Archangel, when a traumatized and grieving Joe is left to take care of Richie's body and to protect Metho's secret. His desire to honor the fallen youth puts him in grave danger from the Watchers, with their harsh and medieval rules about contact between Watchers and Immortals. In this six story arc we discover Methos is not the only Immortal hiding in the ranks of the Watchers. But unlike Methos, who avoids conflict, this one is ruthlessly using the Watchers to hunt Methos. The arc explores Joe's history with the Watchers, what happened during the year Macleod disappeared after Archangel, and stretches into the future, when another Watcher is charged with verifying the records left by Joe and finds he must decide whether his allegiance is to the Watchers or the Immortals.

The stories are exciting, intricately plotted, and vividly told. They are special treats for those of us who love Joe and are intrigued by the Watchers. Plus there are several complex and fully realized original characters.

These are some of the first Highlander stories I read and I've returned to them several times since. They always satisfy.

02:32 am The Trip by Debbie L. (PG-13)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: None (gen)
Length: 157K
Author on LJ: [personal profile] debbiel66
Author Website: Everything she's written is on Live Journal, two of her stories can be found at the Me and Thee Archive
Why this must be read:

Trip [noun]

1. a stumble or fall
2. an experience caused by taking mind-altering drugs
3. a journey

I rec'ed Debbie's first S&H story, Passing Time, as my first rec of the month.  I figured it might be a nice idea to close the circle and make her latest story, The Trip, my last rec.  It's the "opus" I alluded to in my earlier write-up, and it's amazing.

In it, months after his ordeal at the hands of Forrest and his men, Hutch has begun using drugs again.  It's not heroin this time, but prescription painkillers.  He hides the problem from Starsky until his pill-popping has turned into a full-blown addiction.  When Starsky discovers what has happened, he is determined to pull his partner back from the edge a second time.  So he kidnaps a not very appreciative Hutch, and takes him out into the desert, away from everything and everyone.  Together they struggle to take Hutch through another painful withdrawal.

That brief synopsis sounds horribly grim, and to be honest, Hutch becoming a drug user again is not a trope I enjoy.  But in Debbie's hands, Hutch's weakness, Starsky's horror, and their joint determination become a moving examination of what these two mean to each other, and how much stronger they are when they've joined forces against a common foe, be it drugs or a killer sandstorm.  It's a story that sticks with you a long, long time.

The Trip

P.S.  I want to say thanks to everyone for their encouragement and support this month.  It's been a blast.  And a heck of a lot harder than it looks!  I hope I was able to introduce you to some stories and authors you may not have been familiar with.  I look forward to reading everyone else's recs in the months to come.

Fandom: HOUSE MD
Pairing: House/Wilson (eventually)
Length: 45,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] starlingthefool
Author Website: Fic list on LJ
Why this must be read:

House is all about solving the puzzle, and this fic gives him an excellent one to play with: how to weasel his way back into Wilson's life (and maybe investigate seducing him as well) when James Taylor forces them apart.

Yes, James Taylor the singer.

Excerpt )

As the author says: House MD/Dead Like Me crossover. Afterlife!Fic. Thus, by necessity, also a death!fic, but not depressing. If you haven't seen Dead Like Me, there's no worry. House hasn't seen it either, so you can learn about the universe as he does.

This story is a marvelous mix of humor and pathos - absolutely appropriate for House - and the devotion between House and Wilson is clearly drawn without descending into sappiness. (And when you're dealing with death, and House doing good works (seriously!), and eternal life, hoo boy, could a story go down that road fast.)

Why this must be read:

This is incredibly powerful, thought-provoking, and disquieting. The author warns for angst, graphic descriptions, and disturbing content, and, yes, all those are present. The story shies away from nothing except the temptation to tell you what you to think.

The structure is perfect; the writing is brilliant. Over a year later, I'm still reeling. The only hesitation I have in recommending this story is that, although it's not a deathfic, some may find the content triggering. If that could be the case with you, click on the "SPOILER" link in the author's warnings.

Length: 63,349 words in 15 chapters + epilogue
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jedinemo
Author Website: Author's page on fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

As any Star Wars fan knows, in a Galaxy Far Far Away the possibilities are seemingly endless. This remains true for fanfiction based in the Star Wars universe, a place where fanfic writers can explore the aftermath of what we've seen in the movies, or create an alternate path for our favorite characters. This amazingly creative story does both, giving us a Vader approximately three years before the events of A New Hope, whose fate becomes intertwined with that of a clone the Emperor has made from him. The 16 year old clone's name? Anakin Skywalker. This is a wonderful ensemble piece that brings in characters from both trilogies in unexpected and surprising ways. You will not be disappointed.

Why this must be read:

We've seen plenty of evidence about Anakin's envy of his Master, both in canon and in fiction about the characters. But it's been a rare (if not entirely elusive) thing to see Obi-Wan's envy of Anakin in turn. This story by an always competent author in the Star Wars fandom explores the concept of Obi-Wan's feelings of marginalization in relation to both his own Master and then his apprentice. Gorgeously written, honest, and perfectly in character.

Why this must be read:

First, some warnings: This one isn't for everyone. It discusses bestiality, incest, and several other kinks that are a bit over the line into perversions.

This fic is an AU. It's written as a mock documentary about individuals belonging to an LJ community centered on unique sexual practices. All the NSYNC guys are in the documentary.

I thought the fic was delightfully funny, but I know some people were disturbed by it.

There's absolutely nothing explicit here but the writing is so skilfully subtle that it says everything that needs to be said.  Here's quick summary:

DCI Gene Hunt was a man who liked being in charge. When he spoke people paid attention, when he shouted people jumped, and when he glared people ran in the other direction. And he was happy with this.

Why this must be read: Because it's a great hurt/comfort fic!

Just like AUs, hurt/comfort fics are minefields of clichés and bad stereotypes. Especially, because they are very often combined with excessive angst and sorry gals, but TS just wasn't angsty enough for all the "a single tear rolled down his check"-stuff.... It had angsty bits, for sure, but I love my boys bickering and slashy.

But what TS did have was its fair share of Blair in hospital and Jim on all sorts of drugs....

I wonder if I can find a story that combines these two, is well written and hotness wouldn't hurt, either ... oh right!! Go and read this one. It's good.

Why this must be read:

Angel is one of those characters that people either like or hate. When she first showed up she was something of a Mary-Sue. She was important to Casey even though he's never mentioned her in the past, she was a badass, and despite being fourteen she was a strong enough martial artist to take down several full-fledged Purple Dragons. She got better in later episodes (In the massively awesome Same As It Never Was Angel led a team of commandos against the Shredder) but she started off kind of annoying.

This story manages to make this two-dimensional Mary-Sue into a sympathetic character with interests and feelings – and those feelings happen to involve a certain brainiac mutant.

Author Website: BDS tag at Author's Journal
Why this must be read: I missed crossover day! That made me so sad I can't even express it. So... I'm making up for it now and hope the mods forgive my lateness!

Blood of the Saints and it's sequel, Every Time I Look in the Mirror, are based on a concept that is done amazingly well. Blood of the Saints crosses over with Constatine, and Constantine's voice is pitch perfect and his opinion of the MacManus twins is sharp, biting and blunt. The plot is subtle, but very present, and the idea behind the plot is vastly engaging.

The sequel, Every Time I Look in the Mirror, takes place after a time jump of irrelevant length and crosses over the MacManus brothers with the Winchester brothers. The twincest is far more subtle and this story can be read without reading Blood of the Saints, as long as you read the author's notes. I was completely enthralled by this fic and knew I wanted to rec it as soon as the mods tapped me for the month!

Both fics are pitch perfect, but the sequel is really the fic I wanted to rec here. I hope you all enjoy them both!

This will be my last BDS rec and it's been a hell of a ride. :D

Okay, so it's goodbye (and a frap) from puffy-faced Pete, his little dog, and from me. I have loved taking my turn here, and the power has totally gone to my head. Fandom: Bandom (FOB and MCR)
Pairing: Pete/Patrick, befuddled Gerard
Length: 3,612
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] valerie_z
Author Website: http://www.valerielewis.net/

Why this must be read: Because I'm BREAKING ALL THE RULES to rec it! I totally already recced something by Valerie, but DAMN. DAMN. This story makes me laugh like Mutley from the Wacky Races. What we get is Pete giving Patrick useful hints on how to seduce Gerard Way. The hint-giving goes on for some time:

"Okay, step two. You have to make yourself appear dangerous and vulnerable. He has substance issues, so doing a cute drunk thing could get triggery and backfire. We'll have to go with a mild case of depression. But you don't want to inspire him to write a song about you or anything. We need something that's not too heavy." He stopped pacing and thought for a moment. "Do you think you can pull off seasonal affective disorder?"

Patrick shrugged. "I guess."

"Okay," Pete continued. "So he comes in, you compliment him, give him a Pop Tart, angst over the weather, and then, get naked."

IT WOULD WORK ON ME. Okay, look, I just want you all to have a rollicking good time, right? And this story is a ROLLICKING GOOD TIME. It is a story in which Gerard Way is the normal one. He thinks Pete and Patrick are doing performance art. Go click the link, it'll make love and light expand in your heart. Pairing: Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles, Jared/OFC's (brief)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jenadamson

Why this must be read: because this story is just lovely. Loosely based on the movie, Kissing Jessica Stein, the author gives us a womanizing Jared, who runs a art gallery with his two best friends, Sandy and Adrianne (who are a couple) and Jensen, who is just unlucky at love. Deciding to change his life, Jensen answers a personals ad in the male seeking male section of the paper which leads him to meet Jared. Neither man believe they are gay, but as their feelings for one another grow, they just might have to redefine the labels they (and society) have placed on them. An exquisitely written and romantic story.

Why this must be read:

It was hard to choose just one of Leda's fics to rec; it's all such high quality. (I had this problem with more than one author!) This one deals with the ramifications of what Kara went through on Caprica in a particularly satisfying (but not at all overly dramatic) way. It captures what I love about Kara and Lee's dynamic in the first two seasons; the friendship and mutual support as well as the unspoken longing. The story is told in an almost photographic style, though a series of observations and recollections, with exquisite use of visual detail. Lovely and unique.

"Anything, and anytime," he reminds her. Her smile is briefly brilliant, warms him from somewhere deep in his gut, but he knows already, just from that smile, that there's things she's planning not to tell anyone.

Why this must be read:

This is a premise I've seen a couple of times in due South fic - Fraser needs to get somebody to talk for police purposes - in this case, a professional snitch - and the only way to do so is by admitting to his secret gay love. It is convenient for him that this is such an effective technique. I really like Fraser's voice in this - it's told from his point of view, and you really get a sense of how lonely Chicago can be for him, and how desperately he tries to do the right thing. It's always nice to see some police work getting done, and there's some lovely Fraser/Diefenbaker interaction.

I hope you've enjoyed these stories. I'm glad I got a chance to share some Vecchio love!

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm cheating. But the instructions did say I could mention more than one fic if they fit a theme, and my fascination with fixed-length ficlets has led me into temptation. Ever since KCS invented the 221b (221 words exactly and the last one has to start with a "B") a number of authors over at ff.n have been playing with the toy, and producing works that range from angst to sheer silliness. Why this must be read:

An episode tag for S3 E5 Common Ground. This is the first fic I read that paired John/Wraith--yes you read that right. Sylvan went to that dark place, but at the same time cast a light into the shadows adding a different mix about the wraith. I also adored the background she gave John, and of his interaction between Dave aka the Wraith. It is dark, different, and well written, IMO definitely worth your time.
Author's summary/notes: Episode Tag for 3.05, Common Ground. Nothing is as simple as black or white, good or evil, friend or foe. John discovers a few things he didn't know about the Wraith. Author's Note: In the grand tradition of many writers over the ages, I have taken an existing situation and asked, "What if?" In this case, what if the wraith who claimed John's life could offer something sweet in return? Nothing is as simple as black and white, good and evil, friend and enemy. There are no simple truths. If consensual sex between John and a wraith squicks you, then you may want to forego this story.

Why this must be read:

It's been a pleasure to rec Firefly for the month of July 2008. Thank you!

I will leave you with a story that is a fine example of why I adore the Mal/Simon pairing. The author calls this semi "pre-slash" but to me, it's just about the building of the relationship between Mal and Simon. Because to realistically have them in a relationship, they will need to earn their trust. Not just sex, a relationship.Yes, many of the stories I enjoy are dark because of the intensity between Mal and Simon you feel from the very first moment they meet. There is an under lying tension always bubbling. But, this story is a good example of another reason I love Mal/Simon. Loyalty. They have a hard earned loyalty, but once their trust is earned, they are family. And even if family doesn't like each other all the time, they do love and protect each other no matter what. Most certainly in the deep dark black against their mutual enemy of the Alliance.

Why this must be read:

There's no way I could let this month go by without recommending this story. This sprawling epic, set in the modern day, tells the tale of Tony Higgins (Racetrack), a recovering cocaine addict and high school student whose father just happens to be in the mafia, and his burgeoning relationship with foster kid Sean Conlon (Spot). But it's so much more than that. It's a story of love and friendship, a story of family, a story of music (the characters have a band), a story of pain and happiness and everything in between. It's very much an R-rated story, with copious references to drugs and sex and quite a bit of profanity, but none of that ever feels gratuitous. And, perhaps most interestingly and importantly of all, this is a story that is also a universe - an entire universe unto itself, a universe that contains the characters we all know and love from the film but that puts them in a setting so wildly different that the story itself feels completely original. And because of that, the story is able to expand beyond its borders. Though the fic itself is a complete entity, bits and pieces of sequels and prequels abound, most of them found at the community linked in the header. These girls created an entire world with their story, and it's a world that shows no sign of ever completely going away.

And, honestly, it's just a great, great story. It's well-plotted, the characterizations and dialogue are consistently spot-on, every original character is fully-realized and has an important role to play, and it touches all the right emotional beats. There's a reason that this is one of the longest and most popular fics in the entire fandom - it's just a great piece of writing, regardless of any other factors. And if you're in the fandom and somehow haven't read it yet, I advise you to do so post haste.

Why this must be read: who doesn't love the idea of Jensen Ackles as a professional bullrider and Jared as his young protege? But seriously, this story is emotional, angsty, gripping and so believeable. With heartfelt images, you can tell the author did her research on professional bullriding. And unlike Brokeback Mountain, these two cowboys get their happy ending, although they have to go through hell first.

Why this must be read:

The CGI movie came out in March 2007 and spawned a whole new batch of fanfic. The movie was rather awesome and made many fans very, very happy, but there was just enough NOT covered to give writers incentive to write.

Early in the movie we see that Raph and Donatello aren't exactly getting along these days (Raph's being a jerk, Don's being condescending). By the end of the movie we're left to assume that all is well - but the two of them really never interact at all for the rest of the movie. So what went wrong, exactly, that had them at each other's throats in the first place? And was it really resolved that easily?

Irreplaceable is one of the many fics that tackled this subject and Donny's Boy worked his own story into there as well. Recent oddities in Donatello's behavior have caused Raphael to take another look at his brother and re-evaluate the way they treat each other. It's a nice change from the plethora of fluffy epilogue fics that have Raph and Don just magically deciding they aren't mad at each other anymore. After all - anyone who has a sibling knows it's never that easy, right?

Though Raph enjoyed being right - and enjoyed its corollary: Leo being wrong - he couldn’t completely ignore the twinge of discomfort in the pit of his stomach.

Don had covered for him, and Raph didn’t know why. It’s not like he’d done anything lately to get into Don’s good graces. Quite the opposite, actually, and Don sure hadn’t endeared himself to Raph. And this was a bit worrying, because Donatello always had a very careful, very meticulously-considered reason for everything he did.

Always.

Why this must be read:
Because this story will break your heart into tiny pieces, then melt said pieces and make you a completely new heart that is infinitively more beautiful than your old one!

Those of you who looked at all my recs this month might have discovered a certain pattern in the fics I love: shortish first-time stories with an emphasis on the humor. Well, this one is completely different and quite possibly the exception that proves the rule. This story is heartbreaking and deals with serious issues like prejudices, harrassment and a brutal gay-bashing. Jim and Blair suffer as an out gay couple in the police, but they do it in true TS style, are perfectly in character and overcome all adversity.

It also focuses more on the Sentinel/Guide aspect than most of the other stories this month and again, it's very skillfully done. It's a great, great story.

Why this must be read:

I love fic that explores potential AU scenarios, where the repercussions of one change in storyline are explored in detail. This fic examines what might have happened if someone else had been captured by the Cylons on Caprica. It's by turns exciting, terrifying and just plain creepy, as befits the subject matter, with spot-on characterization and attention to detail.

Don't pass out, Anders. You pass out, you're gonna be their baby daddy and you've done such a good job avoiding that so far in your life.
