Fandom: Alias Smith and Jones
Pairing: Hannibal Heyes / Kid Curry
Length: 723 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jaekayelle
Author Website: unknown

Why this must be read: A short but oh-so delightful scene set entirely in a hotel room. I don't want to give too much away, but here's the set-up: Heyes comes back early from a job surprising Kid in the night. It's a tiny nugget of pure reading pleasure.

Fandom: ENTOURAGE
Pairing: Vince/Eric,
Length: @39,000 wds
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] fourteencandles
Author Website: Fic Index
Why this must be read:As fun as the Aquaman ride was I've always thought they should have taken Tapping the Source and I've always wondered where they might be now. Again, Fourteen Candles takes you on a journey that feels like real life. The happy, the sad, the inbetween. Plus I'm a sucker for sucessful E stories and this is one of the best.

Length: 9,170 wds

Author Website:None
Why this must be read:True outsider pov is very rare in the Entourage fandom, and outsider pov done very well is rare period. It's a crossover with Dirt but you don't have to be familiar with the show at all to understand that a tabloid is pretty much the perfect medium to cast a light on Vincent Chase. They are both completely invested and emotionally distant from everything at the same time. And it just works.

“Flakes don’t live with friends they’ve had since they were children,” Lucy counters. “Flakes don’t work their asses off on Oscar-winning movies. Flakes don’t love someone they’ve known for twenty-five years.”

12:39 am Final Cut-Justabi(M)
This is my final rec. I've really enjoyed reccing this month and I hope I've helped you discover some new fic or rediscover some gems as I have. Here's wishing everyone a wonderful New Year.

Fandom: ENTOURAGE
Pairing: Vince/Eric, Vince/Eric/Sloan, Eric/Sloan, Sloan/Billy
Length: @ 44,000
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] justabi
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/justabi

Why this must be read: The wonderfulness of this fic can't accurately be described with mere words like funny or hot, or heartbreaking. It's certainly all those things and more. It sweeps you up and keeps you dangling breathlessly for the whole ride and makes you love it. It's Vince's story and E's story, but it's also Sloan's story and Billy's story, and Abi makes you invest in all of them. In the interest of complete disclosure, it was written for me in the Entourage fest, but she turned a tiny vague prompt into an amazing product.

At eleven o’clock at night on a Tuesday Vince is standing half-naked in Sloan’s cavernous closet with E, who is looking very nervous and fiddling around with the elastic waistband of his silk boxers like he can’t decide if he might need to add a chastity belt or something, when Vince’s phone rings.

04:50 am Hidden Sides by Ante_luce (M)
I promised myself I would rec only one story per favorite author. It was really tough picking this one out...

Fandom: TRANSFORMERS
TF Continuity: G1 and post-TFTM
Pairing: Prowl/Jazz
Length: approx. 1,800 words (both parts)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ante_luce
Author website: none
Why this must be read:

Prowl/Jazz is one of the major OTPs in TF fandom. They're both black and white! They work together! They're the 2IC and 3IC of Autobot Command! One is an extroverted Special Ops bot, and the other is an introverted tactical bot! It is a match made in slasher heaven.

This one, however, takes the opposite tack. This turns all the OTP tropes on its side, with unbelievably HOT hate!sex as a chaser.

Hidden Sides (set post-TFTM)
Hidden Sides - Exploitative Tactics um... is mutual sort of non-con a warning?

Fandom: TRANSFORMERS
TF Continuity: 2007 Movie
Pairing: implied Sam/Bumblebee
Length: 797 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] antiquixotic
Author website: on FF.net
Why this must be read:

One thing that we can't really comprehend is that the Transformers are functionally immortal. They were around millions of years ago, and (failing deactivation in battle) will likely be around when the Earth is dust. The inevitable tragedy of loss is the centerpiece of this story, and it drives a spike through the heart.

Fandom: LORD PETER WIMSEY
Pairing: Bunter/Peter
Length: 3,400
Author: [livejournal.com profile] atropos_lee
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] atropos_too
Why this must be read:

Today's rec is a "more than" fic par excellence. It's slash – and explicit slash at that, which makes it a rare beast in Wimsey fandom – but it doesn't only subvert canon by imagining an illicit sexual relationship between master and man. Set in 1917, it shows us what happens when Captain Wimsey and Corporal Bunter encounter each other on temporarily neutral ground, away from the inflexible hierarchy of the army and of English society. I know of no other fic that more thoroughly shakes up Sayers' version of Bunter, giving us a complex psychological portrait of a politically aware, defiantly proletarian soldier, violent, hopeless, and yet searching in his own way for beauty and meaning amidst the squalor of war. It's a fascinating glimpse into a new world, told in a literary style very different in tone from most Wimseyfic, but non-slashers venture into it at their own risk.

Footsteps approaching on the gravelled path. A man, alone. Outline of cap and coat through the veil of fog. An officer. He had a few seconds yet to turn aside from the path, into the murk, and pass unseen.

And yet,

An officer, here, on this path, in this area, in the twilight, loitering, as he was, just the way to attract the right kind of attention.

Now he knew what he wanted. The greater risk, gamey, richer in taste, but soft too, once peeled of his armour of class and rank and service pistol...

Before the thought was fully formed, the familiarity of the tubular figure, peculiarity of gait, the flash of a single eye glass, stopped it dead.

Bloody hell. Not just an officer – that sodding officer.

10:13 am One Hundred Words: BDS by: karisah (R)
Fandom: BOONDOCK SAINTS
Pairing: Some Connor/Murphy MacManus
Length: 100 stories 100 words each
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Karisah FF.net profile
Why this must be read: These are wonderfully done with only 100 words Karisah makes you laugh, cry and/or feel sorrow in all the best ways. All the drabbles can stand alone but I recommend reading them all. They are organized with 10 chapters and 10 drabbles in each chapter. Author's Warnings: These are MY Connor and Murphy and the rest of the gang. Rocco loves vanilla and raw onions. Connor's favorite color is orange. Murphy likes to draw. Please, deal with my quirks as they transfer to the characters. There is some character death. You may see the twins as youngsters. You may read a story completely about a minor character. There are OCs. Since there are a hundred of them, if you don't like one of the stories, skip it and move on.

Why this must be read: Today is the 38th anniversary of Pete Duel's death and I wanted to mark this sad occasion with a few final recs. This first one is written in the style of a series of letters from Heyes to Curry. I really enjoyed this short piece and especially the final post script by the Kid. Can you believe it? Here we are at the end of this gargantuan rec set! I don't know about all of you, but I need a gin and tonic and a bit of a lie down. :)

I hope you've had fun this month; it's certainly been a pleasure for me to share all these favourites with you. I always enjoy an excuse to go back and rewatch fantastic vids.

Why this vid kicks ass: I'm finishing up this set with what is, perhaps, the best loved songvid tribute to rare fandoms: [livejournal.com profile] eruthros and [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings's ode to the mega fic exchange, Yuletide. It has every pairing you can conceive of, and a few you probably can't, and it's so lovingly put together it will leave you both awestruck at the brilliance of it and smiling with happiness. It's that kind of vid.

Why this must be read:

Because it's simply charming, with wonderfully absurd scenarios and spot-on characterization. This story fills us in on what happens between an adventure's end and a silly tag, an ingenious concept pulled off delightfully well. leah k captures the style of the show absolutely superbly, and the pairing is beautifully understated, just as it should be. This is my last rec of the month, and I can't think of a better note on which to end.

Fandom: PRIMEVAL
Pairing: Stephen/Ryan
Length: 52,000 words (ten parts)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fredbassett
Author Website: None – see LJ masterlist
Why this must be read:

I've saved the best until last! We've got some top-quality writing in Primeval, including a number of outstanding series – and The Devil's Crowll is my all-time favourite. It's sustained adventure writing at its finest, with rock-solid plotting, vivid action scenes (you might want to read the caving ones with the lights on!), scary critters and a fantastic team dynamic. It's ostensibly Stephen/Ryan, but the slash takes a back seat to the white-knuckle action.

This is my final rec. Thank you very much for having me and if you want to keep in touch with all the fabulous fiction that's being written in Primeval, subscribe to the [livejournal.com profile] anomaly_news weekly newsletter. Happy new year, everyone!

Why this must be read:

I'd like to finish up this month of recs with a personal favourite. Two years ago, [livejournal.com profile] tree_and_leaf's brilliant and heart-breaking "What if?" AU, Tell Beauty How She Blasteth, was recced here on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, a retelling of Strong Poison and its aftermath in which Peter fails to save Harriet from hanging. Mithridates, he died old has a similar premise, but opts for an entirely different narrative approach, distilling the story of the successful murderer, Norman Urquhart, into a tiny, exquisite ficlet that is all the more powerful for the economy with which it hints at horrors without lingering on them. I won't provide an extract, because it's so short that to give anything away would risk ruining it, but it's a painfully sharp insight into Urquhart's twisted psyche, and it has a killer of a last line.

Fandom: TRANSFORMERS
TF Continuity: G1
Pairing: Ratchet/Sideswipe/Sunstreaker
Length: 1,047 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] seeker_freefall
Author website: on FF.Net
Why this must be read:

As twins, Sideswipe and Sunstreaker are known to have a 'split spark, which has led to a plethora of fic where they are a two-for-one deal. This story takes it a step further, where the twins have bonded with Ratchet, and what follows when the worst has happened.

I cannot recommend this short highly enough. Tissue warning ahoy!

Title: More Than Meets the Eye by astolat
TF Continuity: 2007 Movie
Pairing: Dean/Sam, Dean/Impala (implied)
Length: approx. 1,858 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] astolat
Author website: fanfic by astolat
Why this must be read:

In a fandom where one of the main characters is the car, it seemed inevitable that Supernatural would be crossed with Transformers. We're just really lucky that one of them was written by astolat, whose authorial cred can make me read anything. I mean, it's astolat--how can you not give this story a try?

This is absolute GOLD. Dean and Sam are driving past when the highway battle of the 2007 movie blows past them, and shenanigans occur. It is written from the Supernatural point of view, so even minimal exposure to the movie is enough to enjoy the story. The ultra-cheese cliche title gives it that extra bonus oopmh of awesome.

02:30 pm All the Rest is Silence trilogy by Dorothy Elggren [PG]

Fandom: FOREVER KNIGHT
Pairing: gen
Length:  novel length
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Writing About the Knight

Why this must be read: When I first re-entered the fandom I consumed all the fic I could get my hands on. Stories that take place after the series finale are very popular but as satisfying as they were, I found myself looking for a certain type of post-Last Knight story.  I was itching for something that looked at "Last Knight" within the context of what very likely happened. As devastating as the finale was, I wanted it addressed. In the wake of the finale's events, characters were left behind, namely Captain Reese, as well as the one time or supporting characters that were never revisited like Natalie's family or Grace Balthezar. How did they deal with the mystery of it all? Dorothy's "All the Rest is Silence" trilogy could not have been more perfect. Tragic, fitting, and heart breaking.

Fandom: FOREVER KNIGHT
Pairing: Natalie/Janette
Length:  1841 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dknightshade
Author Website: Knightshade's Garden

Why this must be read: Femslash is not something that strongly figures in Forever Knight fandom, but that doesn't mean the potenial isn't there, as this story aptly demonstrates. Throughout the run of the series Janette and Natalie had very few scenes together. It's one the show's greatest tragedies. Knightshade uses the events and the Natalie and Janette interaction from "A More Permanent Hell" to weave a sexy and plausible scenario that keeps both characters true to themselves. Janette controls the situation with her usual grace and Natalie never lets go of the curiousity that is so much a part of her.

Why this must be read: I'm a sucker for episode-related fic. In this tag to "The Fifth Victim" Heyes is cold, still recovering from his injuries and Curry is comforting him by curling up with him and telling him a story. Heyes certainly finds the story stimulating. So did I.. This is just marvelous, naughty and extremely hot. It certainly warmed Heyes right up.

Why this must be read: This is another post finale story, only this one looks at the lives of the characters after the passage of a substantial amount of time. Fifteen years to be exact. In the eyes of the world Natalie has moved on--to a different continent, to a new life, to a new man--or has she? An invitation to Jenny Schanke's baby shower brings her back to Toronto and its ghosts for one last time. This story does a lovely job of etching the curiousity that surrounds Natalie and in creating a wonderful presence in Myra Schanke.

It's definitely Kradam, but it's also a kick-ass ensemble fic as well. This fic has some really great Gen elements.

I find this particular story appealing because of the wonderful way Susan builds on the world of show by fleshing out characters that only talked about but never seen. In this case, it's Jenny Schanke, the young daughter of Nick's partner. Through her Nick begins to get an idea of how he has unintentionally weaved his way into the lives of a lot of people.

Why this must be read: This fic is a personal favorite. There's a quiet simplicity to it. There are no great big revelations or disasters. Just a simple conversation between a husband and wife in the early minutes of the dawn. Told through the POV of Myra Schanke, it deftly hits upon how those unfamiliar with Nick's vampiric state would view his "eccentricities". What Myra deducts is a picture of Nick that isn't entirely off the mark and it helps her appreciate the blessings she has in her own life.
