02:58 pm Lie Perdu by Sihaya Black (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 92 KB
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: The Forest Archive http://www.squidge.org/~theforest/senfic.html
Why this must be read: This is one of the first stories of this type I ever read and it introduced me to the incomparable writing of Sihaya Black. I had never been a fan of stories with kink, but this changed my mind. It's a first time story, a rescue story, a bdsm story and was probably the first story I read in which an author explores the side of Jim Ellison that might want to be tied up and dominated. Sihaya Black does this on more than one occasion, but this introduction remains the story I have gone back to re-read the most.

I apoloize for starting my Sentinel van drive so late -- I have been out of touch with LJ for awhile, but I plan on making up for lost time. I've been in the fandom for over ten years, so I want to rec both some old faves and also newer wonderful stories.

03:16 pm Ashes on His Eyes by Kate Roman (PG)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing:  Buck/Chris
Length: 450 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] romankate
Author Website: Author's M7 stories on LJ

Why this must be read: These two are different again.  They have a shared history of violence and tragedy before we ever meet them in the show and there is the sense that some tension remains between them as evidenced more than once during the episodes.  Then of course they exhibit the closest thing to a clinch on-screen as any of the Mag7 couples do (well, apart from when Vin fell down the mountain) :)  This crisp and evocative shortie is just a taster of how Buck and Chris have the potential to do both epic and cosy.

Buck must have seen the turmoil in his eyes, and laid a strong arm over his shoulders. That, and the look in his eyes, said everything Buck couldn't say out loud.

05:57 pm Mau Loa Means the Time We Have by gaiaanarchy (PG-13)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: Sheppard/McKay
Length: ~ 15,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gaiaanarchy
Author Website: Fic Tag on LJ
Why this must be read: As far as I know, Gaia has left fandom, but her wonderful character-driven stories remain. This one in particular has always gotten to me, and the final image of the story lingers in my brain as one of the most poignant. The story's an AU (of sorts) in that it departs significantly from SGA canon. It's a post-Atlantis world where Sheppard never went there and Rodney came back ... different. (Note: it's established fairly early that he's using a name other than his own, but it's very clearly Rodney.)

It's the story of how these two men - both damaged, both survivors of things they can't talk about - find each other, and through that relationship, find the happiness and belonging they never thought they would.

Usually, people are glad to know he's a pilot. The Air Force is the Harvard of the services. People will accept that he's not just a dumb grunt. )

06:23 pm Crash landing by midnightsarah (G/Green Cortina)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Ray Carling
Length: 510
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] midnightsarah
Author Website: LJ fic
Why this must be read: As far as I can work out, unless she's changed her LJ name and is now amongst us under a new ID, this is the only fic [livejournal.com profile] midnightsarah has ever written in any fandom. But it's a gem of a sad short story that shouldn't be allowed to disappear too, exploring the profound effects Sam's arrival in CID have upon Ray's life. Plus it has an absolutely A1 top-notch killer twist at the end!

08:53 pm Deductive Method by circleswithin (G/PG)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: Rorschach/Nite Owl II (Gen)
Length: 5k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] circleswithin
Author Website: circleswithin's Fanfic
Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] circleswithin writes a variety of great slash, crack, and fluff and I recommend a spin through her fic list. In a conversation with Laurie, Dan recalls Rorschach as extremely intelligent and a brilliant tactician. We don't get enough of this Rorschach, partly because the paranoid and isolated Rorschach of the later days can be so much fun. However, when done well, pre-Roche case Rorschach is simply awesome--as this fic illustrates. During the course of a case, Dan has to re-evaluate his perception of his partner as the brawn to back up his brains and realizes exactly how much trust Rorschach has placed in him. I return to this story often because of the touch of bromance, the humor and the way the case, while having significantly more weight than is usual, reveals insights into both characters.

“Found something.” He holds it out on a splayed palm: a bandana, a stained, faded blue thing worn thin in patches. “Gang identifier, most likely. Hurm…I don’t know this one.” He runs his thumb over the worn fabric. “Common color, though. South Side Ghosts, Latin Nation, TBK, Bloodrunners. Heh. Always found it funny that a gang with blood in the name would use blue instead of red.”
